Humphreys Penalty Shout

Feels like Groundhog Day, could write a thread every game about an incident involving Humps.

I think it was the Reading game I highlighted that he'd been denied a stonewall pen, but even in that incident it felt like he'd gone down a little easily.

Reading the matchday thread, it seems like the consensus was that the same happened today. But from where I sat, he could have stayed on his feet if he'd wanted to and would have been 1:1 with the keeper from 10 yards - he'd beaten the defender which is why he was pulling him back.

Yes, the ref should give a pen anyway, but I'd rather a centre forward back himself to stay on his feet and score from that position.

 

Not sure he could stay on his feet, he was blatantly dragged down

 

He’s trying to back in to hold off the defender who then pulls him in that direction causing him to fall over. It’s a penalty notice the defender doesn’t go chasing after the ref saying he’s dived etc as he knows he’s got away with one.

 

That’s the thing if Humphrey’s went down like that and a pen wasn’t given then it should be a yellow for diving

 

I think one of the things I'm most sick of in football is the cheating. Let's not call it gamesmanship, or buying fouls.. It's cheating.

Humphreys isn't pulled to the ground. Test it out yourself, go over to someone you know, slightly pull their top and see if they end in a crumpled heap with their legs giving way beneath them. I'm thinking they'll stand there looking at you like you're a bit odd and nothing more.

Referees seem conditioned that a player has to be on the floor for it to be a foul, players are conditioned that they need to fall over to get fouls. How did football allow itself to get this way? Where cheating in every way was not only accepted but encouraged.

I've looked at it again this morning and I still think it shouldn't be a penalty but in this day and age is usually given. Football really has lost all of its integrity.

 

I agree it’s a shame he thinks he needs to go to ground to get the penalty, when really he should be trying to stay on his feet and get a shot on goal, pity refs don’t give penalties for a when striker try’s to get the shot away without going down too easily but is impeded enough......hope that makes sense?

 

No doubt that happens in our box and he gives it.

Also when did shirt pulling become acceptable? Although my son recently played against an Everton academy team and everyone of their defenders played the same way get a big hand of the opponents shirt and don’t let them move so it’s clearly something that’s being coached into players.

In fact just looked at it again and it’s more of a pen than when I saw it live - he can’t actually stand his ground because he’s being hauled back before he’s even got the ball under control.

 

Wasn't there a big crackdown on shirt pulling a few years ago? Looks like its been rolled back and every corner of every game should be a penalty. Including in our own box, DeGevigney and Earl do it constantly, so we must be coaching it too.

We imported it many years ago when the “Carlos Kickaballs” from Argentina and the like started flooding into the game. Alan Sugar called them that and it was obvious the way the game was going from then onwards.

Dirty cheating players became dirty cheating coaches and managers so that’s the game now, and will always be so.

Very easy to just blame foreigners for everything but personally I wouldn't really be basing what I say on the opinions of someone like Alan sugar

Mind you I am short sighted and was sitting 100 yards away

 

I’ve got no view either way on Alan Sugar. I only mentioned him because I remember him using that term.

 

Plenty of those too. The game grows more corrupted every day

Seen it a few times and I struggle to see why people have doubts about it being a foul. It 100% is a foul in the box and therefore a penalty. I know this if it happened at the other end and the ref didn’t give it, some posters on here who say it wasn’t a penalty for us, would be saying we got away with one. It seems on here we can’t can’t have ‘hard lines’ when it comes to decisions we should get, but it seems we are lucky when on the rare occasions we get favour from similar decisions.

 

Go and wrap your arms around someone close to you. See if they fall on the floor. That's why I don't think it was a penalty.

 

It’s not as simple as that though is it, he’s restricted his natural running process and that in itself can cause you to lose balance and fall. However, it looks to me as there was much more of a contact than you suggest. Definitely a penalty for me
