    Interesting. I'm from the same area and grew up there in the 70s, but my experience was very different . Both Villages had some large Irish (descent) families: the McNicholas', Hanleys, Ruddy's, Sweeney's and Dooley's - the latter producing one of Barnsley's finest actors. You must have been conscious of Hemsworth having more Scots than Dundee!! (sorry Ian). The only area I remember having a West Midland Influence was Royston with it's very weird Black Country dialect. Went out with a girl from there once. With my Grimey accent and her Royston one, we could barely communicate.

    Yeah I'm a Royston lad, our accent is definitely influenced by the influx of miners coming to the area in the 1800's we used to get called posh Barnsley whereas the Grimey and Cudeth accent is more broad in keeping

    Yeah, I was raised in Shafton, schooled in Grimethorpe and currently live in Royston. Given how close the villages are there's a marked difference in the accents.
