I’ve been hearing noises about him signing for them in Jan, also that he’s reputedly on £40k a week at Leeds. I don’t know if he’s out of contract or it’s a loan deal.
We were told same by a couple of locals in a pub en route to Wrexham the other week. They were adamant it was happening.
I think that's the complete opposite mate. Much more physical I reckon. Players above more technical, how many teams have we faced this season who just shut us down, con the ref, nips and scrapes etc. Not sure his body is up for it
Good for them. They're a tiny club who are having an amazing run of fortune at the moment because their owners believe in the romance of football. I remember when we signed Allan Clarke as player manager in 1978. England forward Allan Clarke, who was only 31 at the time, and he played centre forward for us in the 4th Division. Allan f***ing Clarke. And he brought Norman Hunter with him. Norman 'bite your legs' Hunter. The guy who did the Jelly Babies advert. England International Norman Hunter. And then we signed Ian Evans. Welsh international Ian Evans. He was so good. Goodness me. And we signed Ronnie Glavin. Scottish international Ronnie Glavin, who outscored Kenny Dalglish at Celtic, from midfield, and created every goal that Kenny scored. And we got Larry May from Leicester, who, for my money, was a better player in that Leicester side than Gary Lineker. And we got Paul Futcher who'd played in the England under 21s and the top division, and David Geddis who'd won the FA Cup with Ipswich and the title and the European Cup with Villa. And then we got Gerry Taggart and Gary Fleming, top class Northern Ireland internationals, Gerry who played the rest of his career in the Premier League, and Gary who should have done, but had a freak knee injury. And then we got Neil Redfearn and Ashley Ward who destroyed the best Premier League defences who have ever been assembled, and John Hendrie and Paul Wilkinson and Craig Hignett and Darren Barnard who, at various stages in their career, ripped the top division of league football, or international games, to smithereens with their ability. I think it's good that Wrexham have got a good player like Bamford, I hope their fans enjoy it. But Bamford doesn't come close to some of the players I've seen represent Barnsley. You have someone in charge who believes and that talent will come.
Not had any contact with him since I winced when he went down injured in that game against Sheff Utd.
I never saw him play, but in my head he was mid 30s easy in the mid 90s. Turns out he was mid 20s. He's now got his own physio practice and as I say, an absolute hunk post tash.
Slower pace and less skillful players. If Josh Benson signs for a league 2 team I would back him to play 40 league games in his first season.
We bought him as a right back. And he was OK. Machin played a flat back 5 (and a flat back 6 at times) and then Viv played a flat back 4. Gary came to us having only played in the top division and he could certainly play on the right in those systems. But he was just decent rather than special. Then Danny (and Eric) pretty much invented the sweeper system using a small skilful player in the middle of the three rather than three big centre backs that other teams had tried. And Gary Fleming was out of this world. Everyone adopted that system and had Gary not got injured he would have been a superstar.
PS - He's only 4 years older than me and he was just 28 when his knee gave way, after which he never played again. Danny, Eric and John bought Appleby to replace him. And credit where it's due here, that was a great signing, and Matty did really well in that sweeper position. But honestly, he was not a patch on Gary.
Ahhhh those were the days… do our current owners have that same romance and love of football or maybe just a fleeting affair or one night stand maybe ;-)
