Wouldn’t get anywhere near winning that if there was one anyway pal, I’m too tight to go to away games! So on my own point, I’m clearly not a big fan but I also never eluded to being Mr Barnsley FC haha!
I’m a bit confused. In your other post you say ‘as a fan you should get to every game possible’, yet you don’t. Does that not apply to you? - or are you just talking about home games? See, I’m missing some home games, but travelling to majority of aways. Does that make me not as big a fan as I think I am? That would depend on how big a fan I think I am, but I don’t think like that. It’s not for me to judge. I just like going to aways more than homes.
Here's what I'd do if I hypothetically won that 140 million euro millions jackpot the other month. Google tells me the club is worth 11.5m. So I purchase it for that amount. The current owners are in theory happy with that because they're losing 8m a year. Maybe they want a little more to cover some of their losses. Maybe I'm drunk and agree to a 15m purchase to give them a little goodbye gift. That leaves me with 125m. I buy 65m worth of property in the whole of Yorkshire and rent them out. If we're saying the average 3 bed semi costs 200k, then I'm buying 325 of them. The average monthly yield of this kind of property is around £800. So I'm making around 260k a month in my rental yield. That gives me 3m a year in rental income to help with running costs. It's not really my money because I'm now the biggest scum landlord in the area, so my tenants are essential paying 60% of our wage bill. I've got 60m left. I freeze season tickets at whatever price they currently are, but I introduce a free U16 season ticket with every adult ticket purchased. I get a big projector screen on every internal end wall of each stand (showing the lunchtime kick off), with a variety of beers and lagers (cider in the summer). I have 2 different food stalls in each stand. I have a live singer/guitarist for every home game playing between 1-2pm. I'll show the horse racing as well. All the food and drink is in house, but I make sure that we don't run out halfway through the first half. With prices people are used to paying these days, then people don't mind paying for it - as long as its quality That's my off the field stuff with my back of the *** packet maths. I trim the squad. There are just 2 players for each position - with any injuries filled by our youth players or loans if needed. I send my scouts to watch lower league games and Scottish leagues. Plus maybe over to Ireland and Scandinavia. I want to sign players in the mould of Hourihane, Winnall, Scowen, Watkins, Roberts, Pinnock, Mawson, Anderson, Davies, Yiadom, Lindsay, Isgrove, Potts etc. Players who will be hungry for the exposure and looking to progress their games. They've experience of playing games in L2/Conference etc, and we don't give out these long contracts. Yes, this means that we might run the risk of losing players for free, but in this fantasy world I make all the right judgements regarding who to give new deals to and any release clauses. I pack in with 3 at the back. In fact I don't. I speak with various managers who I'm going to let manage. He'll tell me what type of play he wants and how to do it. Whoever impresses me the most I give him the job. Someone like Leam Richardson who's got experience of promotion from this division and didn't get much of a go in the Championship before Rotherham sacked him after not giving him the tools. He gets 4 years minimum, unless he's poached by someone. But he's got a decent release clause to protect us. Then when I wake up and my money has run out I can at least sell all my houses and claw back half of my fortune before my wife finds out what I've done.
Fair points, yes I was talking about just home games. But, I can see the point you’re making. That’s why it does apply to me and why later I openly admitted to not being a huge fan based off my view/definition. And regarding second paragraph you summed it by saying it depends upon what said person thinks upon himself being a big fan. I.e you see supporters of many a clubs saying they’re huge supporters but don’t go to games. Regarding me not going to away games I don’t see the value for a couple of reasons, I.e not all the family goes, although my Uncle doesn’t miss one. If and when the sad inevitably of those family members not being here anymore comes, I’m unsure whether I’d carry on going, unless I manage to have children and make it a generational thing. Which coincides with my point in my initial post that I spend my money to go on the basis of a family get together, the result is a bonus (or not). Also the cost, working it out on an average (which is very average and I’m definitely undershooting, it’s probably 1.5x the figures I’ll give) at £60 per away game. £60 x 23 = £1380. For me, that gets me on holiday, to the UFC annually and most importantly hiking around no one who can annoy me haha! So it’s all a matter of preferences and down to each person. You probably do right over the last 2 years with away games and home form But to finalise, because we’re probably gonna go round in circles, my post was an opinion I stand by and although not aimed at, but based upon people who proclaim, see themselves or tell others they’re big fans but choose not to go. I don’t see myself as a major fan. Certainly I’m immediately bothered when we win, lose or draw but linked to another thread recently I’m not really bothered in the grand scheme of life, and after an hour of the game ending the result and game is out of my head, until I come on here and see all the upheaval
That sounds pretty good. I'd do similar. The thing I disagree with is the scum landlord bit....If you did that you'd be a twa.t, your tenants would hate you and you wouldn't go to heaven. However, the other stuff sounds good!!
Based on the fact that football is in essence a simple game.... If I took over I would ensure Barnsley won a lot and were in the Champions League in 3 years. Its obvious that that needs to happen so Id do it. I'd also make sure all seats in the ground had heat pads in them from Dec-Feb except for away fans. I'd also bring back Toby Tyke on decent wages.
No, I’m not going to go round in circles with you, I agree with most of what you say now you’ve explained yourself, but in hindsight I think you’d have been better off not saying the ‘some won’t like me saying’ bit, simply because I don’t think there is anyone on the forum that doesn’t attend games, but sees themselves as a big fan.
Pay the Chronicle the money they're owed and stop offering them sponsorships of naff players and corporate hospitality instead of cash.
You’re not wrong there. Someone I was with knows him & got talking to him about us a while back & he’s a proper fan with big opinions like most of us. He didn’t hold back.
Players wages are killing it, clubs can't afford it so they have to charge top dollar to the fans...... It's too expensive to watch dross, that is the bottom line.
It's us being terrible at football, never winning a home game and having a div as manager and a bunch of even bigger divs in the boardroom killing attendances. Everything else is noise.
Here's another take. Let's say for example, someone bought 3 season tickets for their family this year. Let's say, hypothetically speaking, that this person has held a season ticket for around 35 years. Now let's say, all of a sudden this person and his family can no longer get to many of the matches, because they've been moved from Saturday to midweek with zero consultation. Let's say this person completely and utterly refuses to pay again, to watch a match they have already paid for through their season ticket, and cannot attend for absolute no fault of their own. So instead, they choose to watch it through other means. Would you still say this person is putting naff all into clubs coffers?
I'm pretty confident if it was the answer, they'd have never asked him - they've done plenty to remove and not celebrate that era. The idea that the Cryne family gets the accolades they do in a stadium built by the Dennis family & they get little to no mention is shameful imho.
Tha twisting words mate, for what reason I don’t know, for instance there’s a lot of “let’s say”, in your argument, have a good Xmas
With my limited knowledge of dodgy sticks why then does the club advertise a VPN package which allows "illegal" streaming?
It’s just a matter of opinions mate. You’re confident they wouldn’t, but I don’t see why anyone would choose to lose millions of their own money and be so unpopular if there was another way. We just don’t know wether they’ve approached him or not, if he’d even be interested or if anything that was relevant to running the club 30 yrs ago, still remains so. Some fans are saying we have too many staff and coaches at the club, but would welcome back Dennis in a consultancy role, based on sentiment?
I'm not sure it's accurate to say the Cryne family has lost any of its own money. It could be, but I thought it had been recouped when the new lot bought in. And there's plenty of ego in business that would prevent even asking for help. I'm not sure John would fancy it but I know for a fact if anybody wanted advice he'd offer it. Football is very different these days but it can't hurt to ask a man who oversaw the development of the club we still see today and is as big a Barnsley fan as there is what he thinks.
