For those who never saw Ian Banks. His spectacular goals were worth the attendance money alone and could land a ball on a tanner 60yds away to a colleague. . We were extremely lucky to have both him and Glavin in the same team. Goals galore. From Midfield.
Generally the same, but personally I'd add Hourihane to the honourable mentions. There were a beautiful few months when it seemed like everything he did was either a goal or an assist.
Not really a Barnsley legend, but for somebody who could turn a match I'd also suggest Ricardo Vaz Te. Wildly talented - I've still got no idea how Keith Hill of all people managed to bag him.
A tanner indeed lol, I wouldn't give you a shilling or a six-pence or a Spanish peseta for one of those now. Id say while it wasn't an awful second spell with us in the late 80s. A lot of fans wont have got to see the original quality version, of Ian 'banger' then.
You would have been a walking erection watching us under Hunter. Now when ever Glavin was on the ball you could have your eyes shut but you knew . With the noise from the stands. At Hillsborough it was 3 sides moans ,lepping lane end was electric. If only I had a time machine to go back just for 30 minutes.
2 most exciting players in terms of running with the ball were King Ronnie and David Currie. The buzz wherever they picked it up and headed for goal was palpable.
From my time (20+ year), Chopra, Howard, Anderson de Silva, JCR, Hammill, Vaz Tê, Keiffer Moore + Woodrow, Mowatt. Not same league as Glavin, Higgy or Redders I know
Gutted that I missed out on seeing King Ronnie by just a few years. I will have seen him play as I know my Dad used to take me in early 80s though my only memories are of being lifted over or crawling under the turnstile. It was 87 or 88 when I took a proper interest and started going on my own so I only remember Banks’ second spell and, as brilliant as he was, folk slightly older would tell me he was a shadow of his first stint. It got me thinking, though, back then, (1987ish) my day out at Oakwell cost less than 3quid. Bus there and back (5p each way) programme (40p, I think) kids admission (£1.20 seems to stick in my mind) and a cone of chips, from cafe in bus station for about 35p. Worth every penny as our, then, stars were Currie and Cooper. What a pair they were on their day.
They were an handful, remember going to Stoke in FA cup away ,being 3 up and drawing 3 3, great cup tie. Even better when we won 2 1 at home and coops did his super back flip being an ex gymnast
Brilliant. I was at the home game. Is that when inflatable toys were the rage and theirs were Pink Panthers? 90 minutes worth of telling them where they could shove them. Was it the next round when we got Everton? Biggest (standing) crowd I have ever been in at Oakwell and only narrowly lost too.
It was ,Everton then old 1st Division ,us 2nd division gave us a schooling and brought us back down to Earth. Big crowd if I remember not quite as full as Man City in the old League cup. Must have been around 1987 ish. Big Kev will know .
The Clarke, Hunter years were magical. More so under Hunter. The away followings owt from 3k (limit, less at some) to the estimate of 17k at anfield. 14k at middlesbro .local Games away end always sold out. 7/8k The sty. 5/6k blunts. Enfield (at white hart lane) an estimated 10k from tarn in a 34+k total. Some got turned away sold out. (match attendance beat Spurs v Arsenal the weekend b4) The Strike then had a big impact on reducing numbers. My favourite grounds for atmosphere. For us. Hull (Alan Clarkes red and white army non stop throughout the entire game. It'd peter off a little then erupt again) . Derby. (Old baseball ground) Burnley.(on the side) And that unforgettable night at Anfield. Wow it was worth going for that alone. Thank you Bazza. I'd forgotten what an erection was lol.
Feb 89 if I remember right, disagree on the schooling bit mindsthi. Nip n tuck all game from my memory with Sharp scoring from the only clear cut chance and I reckon if Everton had any one else in goal instead of big baggy Nev Southall then Futchers beautifully struck shot from 30 yards out would have gone in.....remember loads of scousers laid out in front of the away end with knackered ankles after a crush in the kop, only a few months before Hillsborough...........sithi.
Everything you said there was 100% spot on. However the last line made me chuckle out loud. I'm told by a mate you can get some blue tablets for that. Our lass gives me one with a cup of hot chocolate every night. Hot chocolate sends me to sleep. Blue tablet stops me rolling out o bed.
I dont think we were 3 up at Stoke in the Fa cup Baz, but I think we did blow a 1-3 lead. And it was funny in the replay, telling them a few choice words, about what to do with their pink panthers. We mentioned it on here recently btw, that season '88 was very popular with us having that Cooper and Currie strike force.
