Very true!!! Though to be fair Sir Alex Ferguson spent a lot of money on some absolute dross over the years too! (I’m thinking Kleberson, Massimo Taibi, Nick Powell, plenty more).
I like Gareth Southgate and he is a good man but he doesn’t hold a candle to what this man has done. Kevin Sinfield should have been given a Knighthood.
I was fortunate enough to be in the stadium when we beat; Germany 2-0 in 2021 Switzerland in ET Holland 2-1 in the last kick of the game He’s gave me moments as a football fan that will last forever, whilst he didn’t get a winners medal he brought the team and nation to near success on more occasions than any other manager so for me he’s rightly awarded. Why are we a country of folk who would rather see people’s downfalls than achievements?? Very odd
Yeah proper failure. Only won three cups and the European manager of the season whilst there for one season. After winning the league in two other countries. Yeah he lost the league by two points to Real Madrid. They were crap that year… come on. They might have had a young and outstanding Ronaldo but real were hardly struggling up front with Raul and Davor Suker, who went on to get the World Cup golden boot in 98. Comparing someone who had success at multiple clubs around Europe with Southgate - who had more longevity with England than Bobby but eventually won the same amount with them (nothing), is a bit daft. Southgate was a brilliant orator, a fantastic leader of men and he is unrivalled in getting the squad together, creating a team environment and togetherness. Representing the country with honour and integrity. He was fantastic at all of that and it will be missed. His team and squad selections though were questionable at best, he was tactically short of ideas and against anyone of any quality, frightened to unleash the team and let them have a go. His success is nearly unmatched - but if he was actually also a good football manager rather than just an excellent general manager he would have achieved more in my view, the euro final against Italy for a start. I don’t think the knighthood is necessarily justified but it isn’t my call and where is the line in the sand? I don’t think it unfair to give him some recognition. But there is still merit in the assertion that a better coach and tactician would have won at least one of the last four tournaments with England.
I agree. I’ve no issue with him being knighted. I just think the summer was a mess of his own doing & it’s a shame because he should be remembered more for the positive things he did.
And he will be. There is a limitation after a previous honour preventing a further one until a certain number of years elapse. I think they ought to have foregone that for this example but still, once the requisite time has elapsed I hope (and suspect) Sir Kevin to be officially recognised as such.
I also don't understand why there's a direct comparison. Yes Sinfield will be knighted one day, but just because he hasn't yet had the honour - it shouldn't lead to BUT WHAT ABOUT SOUTHGATE. Mind you, lots of our lot booed when we took the knee, so I can see their angle.
Not sure why you’re trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s obvious he’s just a racist piece of ****
You'd be mistaken to do so in my view....forget the famous people, most honours come through Community recommendations. I know two people who have been awarded MBE's, I'd be a very happy man to be regarded as highly as they are by local folk.
I've got nothing against Gareth Southgate who seems to me to be a really nice guy and model professional. He's probably had some controversy or other in the past that I could probably Google but I can't think of a single one off the top of me head. He's always just come across as someone who tries his hardest every time. He's also given us some good results and we've got quite far in a few competitions. But personally, and this is just my personal opinion, I don't think someone should get knighted for being good at their job. Not a footballer, manager, actor or singer or anyone else. For me knighthood and whatever the female word is (damehood?) should be reserved for people who had done exceptional work helping other people. Those who have done great charity work or heroic acts etc. not a bloke who runs Barnsley council. Would love to see an overhaul of the honours system so that good job performance has the obe's and mbe's and achieving that is considered the top honour in that field and knighthood and dames is reserved for those extra special people. Butttt that's not how our system works and Southgate is a top bloke who tried his hardest for England so can only really be chuffed to bits for him.
Do people need trinkets given out to them by racist thieves to be highly regarded though? If they’re good people doing good things they command my respect anyway. I suppose it’s just the republican in me. I’d tell them where to go. It’s completely irrelevant but I know someone who’s an MBE and is a complete arsehole by the way! I suspect there’s umpteen decent people for every arsehole who gets one of course.
You didn’t reply to this, so I need to make this absolutely abundantly clear. Racism, whether overt or casual, will not be tolerated. The fact you haven’t responded with an explanation is not a good look for you. Please, explain your comment.
Sorry son . Been on charge which is ironic considering the pylon today . Play on words eh . A new experience for me but very educating and enlightening of certain posters . There is no point me saying that I am not racist as my experience of the bbs is that anybody who says that they are not racist is instantly called racist . I apologise that my sense of humour is not understood by a faction on here . I am also confused that bullying , swearing at and bigotry is not called out by your good self . But hey ho we live and learn . I will only joke about acceptable targets in future . Chips back on shoulders . Happy New Year to most of you .
I think someone has touched on this. Sinfield has recieved the following over the last 10yrs. MBE services to Rugby 2014 OBE services to rugby and charity 2021 CBE campaigning for motor neurone disease. 2024 I've no doubt a knighthood will come along soon. Nominations for knighthoods are accepted all year, but the process can take 24–30 months from the time the nomination is received.
