It's a weird one this, on 2 fronts. First, I add him to my list of famous and infamous people who work a long career, then retire and croak. A MASSIVE fear of mine Second, I remember being a very young kid when radio was king, and radio one especially was in its infancy. Hell of a lot of famous and up-and-coming DJs but I always associate him with my parents who always had JW down as an old timer. Past it. In 1972. So I spent most of my adult life wondering how the heck the dinosaur from the early 70s managed to still be on the airwaves. But I liked his style and enjoyed listening. RIP Sir
It’s only a couple of months since he did his last Sounds of the Seventies programme on R2. It was an emotional broadcast, and it’s hard to believe he has gone so soon after that. A great broadcaster and there’s only Tony Blackburn left from his early Pirate Radio days
How sad; SOTS's was the first thing I'd listen to on catch-up driving to work every Monday - used to make the journey fly past in no time. It's a pity Bob Harris has ruined it with his Boys Grammar School sixth form common room show. The one or two specials Johnnie did earlier this year were a good listen.
Yes I heard all of those specials and it was good hearing about the early days (the 1960s). I was doing my paper round when R1 kicked off. It’s a shame Bob Harris hasn’t done a better job on SOTS seeing as he used to be good doing that same show decades ago. I’ll still listen to it now and then, usually on catch up.
