I sent off for the brochure.
I genuinely had some serious thoughts into buying it.

Had the premises had a kitchen upstairs in the living quarters, I may have just gone for it. But it didn't. And I didn't fancy having to remodel upstairs for a kitchen and neither wanted to share the kitchen from downstairs either.

The fact it was freehold was a major pull in my direction with the price it was at.

I still think, "what if" but it's a very risky move for me to make what with the job I currently have.

I'm certain someone with the right frame of mind would make it, certain...

 

Isn't that simply because the TEMPORARY business rate relief is due to be reduced back to roughly the amount that the Tories had it set at in 22/23?

The Dove being sold off was nothing to do with the budget, which happened after the pub was put up for sale. The brewery sold it to the first bidder who offered a price they found acceptable. The new owners want to do something else with it. Doesn't mean it couldn't have been bought and run as a viable business as a pub, just happens that those who bought it aren't in that trade and see a different way to make money. Happens all the time with many different kinds of premises.

 

Rubbish... Minimum wage has been going up steadily for the last few years and energy bills have stabilised.

It's a shame the way they are going but it's been in decline for a long time, Young people just don't go out like they used to and as a result customers are down.

I work in a pub and have done for around 8 years so I've seen the way it's going first hand and you can't blame one budget for a situation that has been in decline for years.

 

The fckin knobs them brewery's you've got to hold free hold,you don't have to sell what brewery's av to sell ya,so ya can get your booze cheaper and they can't sell em.

 

A real shame. Only went in a couple of times but I know it was popular with home and away fans, and as far as I'm aware the only proper ale pub on that side of town - it's a shame none of the others can be bothered with it.

 

At which point have I said I've been picked on? Like in the link I shared the budget and rising energy costs did nothing to help the pub industry. More will close, you think that has nothing to do with the budget I think otherwise.

 

I'll always hold my hand up to Paul an his wife Sue back in the day, he was the one who kick started my career in the pub trade, he got me the interview with the Brewery an put in a good word [ thankyou ] i used to work door for him on match day's and it was me that suggested he start letting away fans in, families at first, always had a good vibe. The Doves been up for sale now for a while and struggled to get an offer for the asking price and recently sold to the highest bid. Me an wife were interested at first but with her ailing health and recently undergoing a hip operation i thought best give it a miss A big plus was the 3 bedroom accommodation upstairs, but the kitchen area was an issue. We did have a pub offer from Old Mill in Rotherham 2012, The Bridge Inn we turned it into the away pub, it was hard work but very very rewarding, we've also been relief managers in Chesterfield, Wakefield, Brigg, Thorne and Bridlington 3 times, all in all i worked pub trade for 6yrs, and then decided to buy and live in Brid. Current state of the UK.

A political party has spent 14 years running the country into the ground nicking everything in sight. It has alienated our nearest trading partner causing the loss of about 4% of GDP. It has failed to address the housing crisis and social care crisis and in fact has made both worse. It has turned a health service that by some metrics was the best in the world to a hollowed out shell.

But aye it’s all the fault of Labour who have been in office a couple of months. Even as someone nowhere near Starmer in political beliefs it’s ******* ridiculous.

Don't believe that for a minute. There are many contributing factors and the main one being Supermarket discounted sales. The decline as been happening for years.

Pubs will be a thing of the past soon, we will end up having cafes selling beer like France.

Micro pubs (if that’s the right terminology), are thriving all around Barnsley.
Nowadays you either have to have a good beer offering or, in general for larger premises, a good food offering.
There’s still a place for a community pub but other than that, traditional large pubs are unsustainable because their overheads are too high and a dwindling number of people wish to frequent them.
