Is it an optical illusion that there is a full light ring round a half moon?

Sounds like you’re looking at your bare arse through the wardrobe mirror with just the bedside light on.

Is this what you mean? The whole moon is always there. The crescent is illuminated by the sun. The rest is dimly lit by earthshine. The longer exposure of a camera picks it up more easily than the naked eye.

Most probably ice crystals high up in the earths atmosphere that are being illuminated, you sometimes see the same phenomena around the sun.
