....according to a post on X we won 2-1 in the FA Cup 3rd Round at non-league Bromsgrove. They absolutely battered us for 88 minutes and led 1-0 only for us to score twice in the last couple of minutes. One of the classic cup days when it actually meant something.
Frightening that it's 31 years ago. A shocking and ultimately lucky display, and the Barnsley 'fans' ripping the corrugated iron off the back of their stand weren't much better.
I was at that game. One of the many times Danny Wilson was booed during that season. My old man told me after that he thought Bromsgrove played as well as most of the teams we had already played up to that point in the season. Not the best performance but one of the highlights of following Barnsley away over the years. We all remember that last 2 minutes, well those of us old enough anyway. I can’t believe it’s 31 years ago.
What a day. Remember it well. Barnsley fans singing F**k off Wilson. He wasn't playing well at the time, but how he turned it around
He got some shocking stick that day, and to be fair he was very poor for a lot of the first half of that season as a player.
Just watched the goals. The absolute state of the "fans" invading the pitch after an equaliser against a non league club - and again after the winner and end of the game. I get the relief those moments must have brought but come on ffs.
I was there too. Rammill and Archdeacon last 2 minutes. Our fans gave team some right abuse that day and justified. Turned out well in end though and tbh it was a great day out
Before the game we went in a pub just as Michael Parkinson was coming out.Evidently he bought every Barnsley fan in the pub a pint.
It might seem a bit mental but the FA Cup was the highlight of any season back then. We'd take a big away following wherever we were drawn to play.
I was living near Chester at the time. I remember walking through the city centre spotting the scores on CeeFax on display TVs. Passed the first one we were losing 1-0, passed the second it was 1-1 and the next shop we'd gone into the lead. It was about 200 yards...
Missed that one. I played Saturday football that season, so was in the pub as the results were coming through.
We didn’t enter until the third round back then though mate, so the draw was more interesting, and we were itching to get involved.
I know one of the Bromsgrove players, this was the first thing he mentioned when he knew I was a Barnsley fan. He speaks very highly of Barnsley folk in general.
Remember it as though it was yesterday D. Was a very eventful day for us that went by minibus. (As cowboy will well remember) Blowout on M42. Torville and Dean. performance. Hence Bus got decorated with ale. Stunk like a brewery. Had to change wheel on Hard shoulder traffic whizzing by. I took over the driving. As 1st driver was very shook up. Mi. Bro. Reversed up an M42 entry Sliproad when traffic ground to a halt just after and we were running late. Took another route. Copper at parking point popped his head in the bus. "No beer on the bus lads" Still reeking of ale. "No boss" Danny Wilson (playing) Got the biggest dogs abuse you've ever heard. We were crap. How we won that is one of the biggest ever travesties. Pitch invasion and a little bother. Chuffin hire co. Wouldnt refund bond. Even though the bleeding tyre was a remould. Happy days
Agreed. I reached the half way line as a young un that day, when pitch invasions meant something. Imagine that been posted on Instagram with todays bummers? Tin pot etc etc
We were more relieved to get past the embarrassment of going out to a non-league team, giant killings were a big thing back then. We lost to one recently and l can't even remember who they were without googling them, they are that common these days with squad rotation etc..
I think someone died in the away end seats that day if memory serves me right. RIP to the gentleman if that was the case but I'm sure I remember a short stoppage for the ambulance service to get to him.
