I take it we aren't planning on doing any last minute signings on deadline day then

Let's hope the squad is good enough to cement our place in the promotion race. I'll put a blue circle in my diary.

I wish I understood how they choose deadline day. Thought it was going to be the first one in a long time where we weren't nervously waiting all night

I’m glad it’s the first one I won’t have had to work in eight years. They’re horrible. You’re there from around 8am until well after midnight, mainly hanging around waiting in case something happens. And unlike the summer version, it’s cold and very rare that anything exciting gets done.

I think the Dike one was my favourite. A number of us were up late watching USA hoping he got off the bench to make his debut otherwise we couldn’t fly him in the next morning. Group chat with Dane was so funny. Great times.
And then waiting for him to arrive, doing a tonne of media content with him and he was absolutely shattered, bless him.

He was just a really likeable kid and whilst Dane was convinced he’d do the business, it was a pretty bold move. We’d already bought Kitching and Morris that month. That period is the most aligned I ever knew the club. Because of COVID to a degree. It meant certain people weren’t here and it was left to the staff on the ground to do their jobs.

The year 2020 and five months of 2021 were a special time. Just a shame the fans weren’t here to see it until the playoffs.

Let’s hope for two things - that deadline day is irrelevant for us, because business is done earlier. And that the club is on the up and up, that it can get back to challenging in the Championship.

I e always wondered with the Dike thing did our interest at all influence USA to bring him on? I've noticed in the past they have seemed to give players their debut really early in their career which allowed them to get visas to play abroad and I e kinda got the feeling that it's a deliberate move simply so they can go to better countries and get experience.

Also what's the latest in the day that you've ever found out about a signing or sale and had no idea beforehand? Not necessarily who, I'm more interested in how late you'd find out.

Dane grew on me massively while he was here, when he started doing the video interviews I think it really changed people's perception of him (Mladen should do them too). He became a really likeable person.

You've been a bit miss in the media department but it really sounds like you made the right choice. You've got great memories and experiences and been able to move on to something else that it sounds like you enjoy plus you've got your family time back.

I remember going to a doo with Keith Hill the night we sold Vaz Te to West Ham. Answered the phone in the middle of the Q&A and told us we'd flogged him for half a million.

Did he sound annoyed or pleased or like he expected it?

It was obviously expected. He gave a lot of interesting context about how they'd originally got him and the boards view on cashing in whilst they could.

That January & the one in 2017 I look back on as proper 'what ifs' for us.

I found out we were signing Christoph Knasmüllner on a winter deadline day, about five minutes before I met him. I think I met him five minutes earlier than Hecky to be fair. We signed McBurnie the same day, which I'd known was likely to be happening for five months. Nothing about working in football makes much sense.
There were signings we knew about well in advance, which allowed you to get creative and do something fun. The Inbetweeners video we did with Morris' signing is a good example of that. Or bad, depending on your opinion.
You rely on others to keep you in the loop. If they don't, or it's a last minute signing, it's harder to create content. You'll be able to tell when a signing is last minute - the content will be basic.

I definitely made the right choice. A couple of years later than I ought to have, but hindsight is great and all that. I'm sure we've all been in that boat, job wise. But you're right, there are some special times that I'm glad I experienced alongside terrific folk.

Dane was a good egg. And really good at the job. I've nothing bad to say about any of the CEOs. I got on with them all. In terms of the current regime, I think Jon is a great bloke and he works his b****** off, day in, day out.
I think I had a good connection with Mladen too in the few months I knew him. I liked his sense of humour and he just seems a decent, down to earth Yorkshireman, like Flatman.
