The Right foot of Derek Bell seals promotion with the winner at home to Grimsby (2-1), 21,261. 8th May 1979……What a night. The pitch invasion at the end was unbelievable!……thank you David Miller off Facebook for the great memory IMG_3203.jpeg

When we got promoted from the 3rd division by beating Rotherham, I was on a business trip in Zaragoza in Northern Spain and not knowing the result the next morning, I was just about to leave the hotel to look for an English newspaper when a bloke walked in with a Daily Mirror under his arm. So I asked him if I could look at the football scores. The conversation went like this.

    Him "What game?"
    Me "Barnsley."
    Him "Oh they won 1-0"
    Me "Brilliant!"
    Him "Are you from Barnsley?"
Me "Near, half way between Barnsley and Doncaster."
    Him "Go on"
    Me "Bolton on Dearne"
    Him "Go on"
    Me "The Ringway estate"
Him "I live in the new houses on Highgate lane near Carfield School"

Could have knocked me down with a feather.

I lived on the estate off Highgate Lane, near that school in the seventies, but I’ve never been to Zaragoza.

    The "Dunk" houses?

That's what he actually said but not many on here would have heard of the Dunk houses :D

The seventies was a different world. :)
However, that promotion was actually May 1981.

That name doesn't ring any bells, but it was a long time ago.

My first ever game. 10 years old. And I missed that goal. Me and my dad were half way up the hill to get the last bus home.
