Well for me that's him off if they approach. They would double his wage. Irrespective of any bid I think Phillips will say he wants to go leaving Barnsley in a situation of reluctantly accepting.
Or, it's the reason that there's these nonsense rumours about him joining Preston every window. A bit like Jordan Williams and Huddersfield.
Only if they meet our valuation. If Adam really is a Preston fan then I'd understand why he'd want to go. I can't imagine anything better than scoring goals for Barnsley. But if Preston aren't able to pay market value, then Adam Phillips wanting to move there because he supported Preston as a boy is irrelevant.
I can understand wanting to score goals for your club. But I could also understand what it would feel like if the fans on the terrace were getting on your back when things go badly. Not sure I could ever have played for Barnsley unless I came through the youth ranks (although having two left feet and not being able to hit a barn with a football from the edge of the six yard box would have precluded that as a career choice!)
TBF, if we'd had Bosman in the late 80s, I might have been tempted to keep falling down the leagues until I found one where I could play at my level. Finland Division 4, or Iceland division 3 or something equally bad. But, I was also lazy and preferred the cider and studying to the life of an international footballer
He’s from Garstang near Preston & is a fan. We got talking to some friends & family of his & they were saying they wished he played for a club nearby so they could watch him more so I doubt he’ll have any family or friends telling him to stay with us!
Maybe, but it doesn’t matter what family or friends tell him, he’s contracted to us and if/until our valuation of him is met then he’s staying here until at least the end of the season
If there was a Scenario. Being a Barnsley fan who would you choose. If in Same league ? Barnsley 4k pw Wendy 8k pw Leeds 8k pw Me leeds and barely turn up and perform. Few own goals maybe. Only kidding I would only get another 2k net. Not worth the difference.
When someone posts that we should sign this player or that. They're told that it's easier to spend someone else's money and the club needs to cut it's cloth accordingly. Be thankful the ownership are propping up the club. Yet. When a player like Phillips hits form and attracts interest. The same fans want to keep him. You can't have it both ways. That's the modus operandi of the club.
To be fair, I don't think anyone's actually said otherwise mate, just that the fact he's a Preston fan doesn't particularly mean he's off and if he does go there, they will have to pay the same as anyone else to meet our valuation. I do agree with you on a broader point though. We've always been a selling club, always will, just like 99% of other clubs mate
I know someone who knows Adam Phillips. He is genuinely happy at Barnsley but is also very ambitious. A move a league higher, whether it’s to Preston or not is something he’ll take. Not sure the club will sell this month as it’ll be hard to replace him. Any offers around £1 million in the summer if we stay in the division might be too hard to turn down though for someone who’s got a year left on his contract. He’s worth a lot more mind….
I dont think this board would accept 1 million mate. Didnt for Andersen. Id expect at least double that. Not my money but I think he's worth more to the club for that extra season than it is flogging him for a million, because we'd get nowhere near as good as him for pennies so we'd have to spend a chunk of it on a replacement... unless Yoganathan can step up.
I’m sure his family are used to seeing him play all over England now, surely comes with the job? I think it would take a silly offer for us to sell Phillips this window and I can’t see Preston making one.
I believe we have the option of a extra year which assume we will take up ,so he will have 2yrs left. No doubt he will be on the move in the summer if we don't go up but with the extra year significantly higher fee hopefully.
Yep just checked article in chronicle contracted until 2026 with option for a extra year so 2 1/2 yes left as it stands.
My concern is like we've seen before maybe not under this board is when the player forces the sale by saying he wants to go...we've had numerous where the manager says well I don't want players here who want to leave.
https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/25993/adam-phillips-signs-new-barnsley-fc-deal Technically he's got two and a half seasons left on his contract, so it should take many millions to sell.
Unfortunately that's the same at any club mate. Let's hope this board has some guts to go tell whoever to ****** until valuation is met
