    Reds away at QPR. 96-7

Memorable football game ? Lost 3-2. Jon Spencer got a hat trick. But then, us chasing the game, Spencer flew in with studs up, 2 footed hideous tackle, right by his own corner flag. Not even a threatening position. lovely person ended Steve Davis’ career in professional football.
Not even a yellow card. & no apologies.
Took his ‘man’ of the match plaudits. 3 goals & a life changing broken leg.?
Yes, well done, you absolute slag.

While I agree with the sentiment, Davis played 42 times for Oxford after leaving us - although that was over 3 seasons, so it was certainly career-limiting.

It happened just in front of me, Davies went to clear it and Spencer went right over the top with his studs. Horrendous “tackle”. I got talking to him a few weeks after and he was obviously on crutches. I asked him if Spencer had visited him in hospital and he said he’d never heard a word from him.****!

Did that happen at the Barnsley end? Late 2nd half?
If that had happened in the streets. Spencer would have got at least 12 months in nearby Scrubs.& don’t confuse 90s football boots as anything less than a deadly weapon.
& it taints QPR . & that lovely Sinclair goal in the cup. I was right behind that beautie. But I think even Trevor, turned out to be a bit of a w**ker?

Wasn't it the 3-1 league game loss and not the 3-2 fa Cup game loss 2 weeks later. That the incident happened.
I've got it in my head it happened at the far end in front of theirs. He was never the same after that.
I think his kid/s are Barnsley fans. Certainly one of em. Got talking to him at Wigan int pub last league match of season.

I remember Spencer denying responsibility in an interview. Spoke of his relief that Davis had suffered a spiral fracture, more likely caused by how he landed rather than the impact itself so, "Phew! Not my fault, guv."

Kind of like shooting someone in the chest and later finding the cause of death was a brain haemorrhage when his head hit the pavement.
