Could they improve us? What's people's thoughts Alassan Jatta notts county...12 goals market value £325k current wage £4.5k Matty Stevens... Afc Wimbledon 12 goals market value £225k
Both have 2.5 years left on their contract, so would command decent fees, particularly Jatta, who I think might end up at a championship side in the summer. Stevens has had a hit and miss career mainly in league 2. I'd say he'd be too much of a risk.
Jatta was undoubtedly a coup for Notts County and has done very well for them. It's interesting that when our fans talk about the possibility of selling Phillips, we should be holding out for £5 million plus yet are also seemingly content to offer peanuts for other teams good players
Thats not how money works is it? we've spent the money on DKD so we dont have the money to spend it again do we?
There's no way we'll be spending a million quid on a striker this window, and certainly not one who's still relatively unproven, particularly at this level. I think we'll sign someone, but it's likely to be an out of favour Championship striker, or a young Premier League one. And probably on loan.
I'm going to be controversial. I don't necessarily think we need a goalscorer per se, as we already have a lot of goals within the team (currently 4th best goals scored in the division - 39 from 25). We look best when Watters is fit and in the team and I believe we need another version or - if possible - an upgrade on him. Therefore, the qualities I think we should be looking for are pace, someone who is selfless and willing to run the channels and is good at holding onto the ball. In addition, they need to be good without the ball, with the ability to press when required. I think we can improve how we defend from the front and this will help the midfield and defence and ultimately should improve the number of goals we concede. Obviously, if they are a regular goalscorer - in addition to the qualities above - then great, but multidimensional players like that cost a lot and are probably out of our price range, though I think we can get someone who will contribute 5/6 goals. I think it's important to get the right type of player rather than just a pure goalscorer.
100% Though, spending millions doesn't guarantee success. We've got to be measured in our approach to recruitment.
Have we got any money to speculate with? Unless we sell Phillips, I can't see us getting anyone of note. Squad as it is, barring injury, should get us into the play offs.
I'm sure there'll be some sort of budget, just not a 7 figure one as suggested above. I do think getting a couple of fringe players off the books is as much of a priority this window as strengthening. We've such a large bloated squad. I'm not adverse to us dabbling in the loan market, particularly if that's going to be the difference between us going up, and missing out again.
Matty Stevens suffered a really bad injury a few years ago and it derailed both him and Forest Green at the end of their promotion year and then the year after. Still not too old but a bigger risk than Jatta who looks class and, like other people have said, maybe holding out for potential promotion/Championship club coming in for him.
I'd be very surprised if we get a permanent signing for a striker in the window. Probably a loanee. I'd love us to get rid of Cosgrove. Dallas, i think may get another loan elsewhere. Marsh doesn't seem fancied by the gaffer, or he'd have started over Cozzy, (who to my mind is just inept), so maybe a loan move for him too. Shame Watters is made of glass, as he looks decent, when fit, as he has pace & makes runs. We need some keeper cover. I can't see much else changing TBH.
I hate this myth that we're skint. Yes Parekh is propping things up but he could spend if he wanted to. What if I he gets hit by a bus? Easy to spend someone else's money. Heard that tosh countless times. The fact is he's propping the club up and isn't skint. Whilst he's doing so it's in his interests to sign a striker that will fire us to promotion. Both facts by the way.
U You make a good argument. Obviously it would be easier to get "the right type of player" than someone who has proved he can score goals regularly at League One level. Pace, ball retention skills and strength are all very important assets and players with these qualities are more likely to go under the radar than regular goalscorers. After all, we can all find out easily and quickly which players are near the top of the goalscoring charts. We are likely to be outbid for those.
