Seeing as that seems to be the area most people are focusing on for new signings, I wondered if there was a broad consensus as to who is the pick of our current crop.

Watters, because his all round game strengthens the side when he plays.

The problem is, he is not a good finisher, which is a pretty crucial attribute for a centre forward. He needs to work *really* hard at that part of his game if he's going to make it at league one or above.

I’d definitely give him a go, he’s good in the air, proven he can shoot ( more than some can say) just send him out and tell him to create chaos

Humphrys by a country mile it’s a pity he’s not more consistent.

I think it's fair to say that there seems to be a pretty firm consensus here. So my follow-up question is this: Why has the player who is overwhelmingly considered our best current striker been limited to second half substitute appearances in 4 out of our last 5 games (he didn't start the other, apparently because of illness)? If we're so desperate for a striker, and trying to get one in, in the meantime wouldn't it be advisable to give the best one we've got as much game time as is reasonably possible? Is it a fitness issue? Are we wanting to play a formation that doesn't suit our best striker, and if so why? What gives?

Edit: Also, isn't it worrying that our currently second-highest polling striker is a defender? Personally I think that's harsh on Watters, for the reasons that @KFC gives, but I can totally see why people would vote for Pines.

Humphrys not much competition sometimes seems bit lazy. Watters suits our style of play with the balls over the top and his pace he just can't finish his dinner.

Personally if he’s fit he’s got to play because ability wise he’s the best we have but maybe it’s a lack of work rate I’m not sure but there’s a reason why he’s still playing no higher than league one.

We play much better with Watters in team. Humphreys probably a better finisher and does a decent job off bench, but his decision making is pretty rubbish and I don't think he stretches teams. Either way, we need another.

Watters is currently the best out and out striker we have at the moment, but realistically none are good enough.

I don't count Humphrys as an out and out striker either as I think he's better off the wing in a front 3 but we obviously don't operate in that system.

Watters has to keep starting for now as the team is better with him in it. But we must sign someone else this window that can do what he can do but score.

We simply can't keep missing the amount of chances we do, he's the worst culprit for it at the moment too. He's not the only one guilty of missing big chances, but he's missed a large number in recent weeks and it is going to cost us more and more points.

I agree on his decision making. He often takes it too far and loses it, when a pass would've been a better option. Also, as he's been lauded as out best striker currently, it's sad he only has 4 goals.

Max Watters. Because he’s an actual out and out striker. Humphrys (who is running away with this vote despite having a worse record in front of goal) is a winger.

Watters actually played well yesterday but he'll be remembered for his misses and not his work rate and intelligent runs.

If we're happy to nearly get promoted then we should stick with nearly man Watters as our main striker and hope that things click for him at some point.

It really shows what a bad bunch we've got to pick from that a wide forward is getting all the votes. We've really only got 2 out and out strikers, and I couldn't pick as our best one who is dreadful in front of goal or one that is dreadful at just about every aspect of the game.

    So Humph it is.

We are desperate for a new signing.

I agree, which is mental really, because when he was first here, his overall game was poor yet his finishing was actually excellent, his first touch finishes especially, and now, it's completely reversed. I'm hoping it's just a confidence issue and he can find his shooting boots again.
