But a hopeful candidate is still exerting time and effort to be selected and after a soft endorsement building up a base in an area.

I'd recommend the book I mentioned, it goes into much more detail more eloquently than I've outlined, it interviewed a really wide range of MP's and candidates to understand the systems and mechanisms that we don't see.

I can't recall the exact detail as it's a good few years since I read it, but I'm pretty sure there were examples of candidates who gave up after several goes being thousands and thousands in debt.

For anyone who thought he'd have managed to control his worst impulses and wouldn't do some of the extreme things he said, I think he's probably proven that's unlikely to be the case.

Not much more than other people who are expected to live and work in two separate locations get. If they had to pay their own expenses, the only people in Parliament would be multi-millionaires. As an example, its £220 from Doncaster to London, plus 3-4 nights in a hotel, plus food and you're looking at the best part of £1000 per week for a local MP just to attend Parliament. Those in Northern Ireland or Scotland could have to pay double that.

£119 for a single from Doncaster arriving in London before 10 with LNER and the same coming back between 4pm and 6:30pm on Friday. You can travel cheaper, but only if you book in advance - and you might not be able to guarantee leaving at a particular time.

 

To be fair arriving and leaving at normal working times i got about £150 from Doncaster to london by train tomorrow with a return. That’s not first class or anything, just a regular ticket arriving at about 8am and leaving at about 6pm.
