Was going to quote this one myself. Sure Ricardo fuller had a run in with one of our fans in that game too.

It will always be Exeter City at home, 1977.

    I was there, aged 8!

I distinctly remember walking back to the station, me occasionally looking up at my silent Dad, and him kicking every rock and pebble across that car park....

I can't believe no-one has yet mentioned the infamous 'Willard' game against Liverpool, in which we took the lead initially and Liverpool only went ahead once Willard had started sending off our players.

Losing that game, after equalising when down to 9 men, effectively killed our hopes of Premier League survival after we'd been on a bit of a run of form, winning the previous 3 games, and looked like we might have a chance.

For me, it was easily the worst one I've experienced and the consequences for the club of that defeat were enormous.

    Nothing else comes close.

You are right with the score and I also think we were 3-0 up.
But by the same Token. 3-0 down after around 15-20 min. (3 shots 3 goals as i remember it. Then we steamrollered em) Fulham 4-3. Imo, our greatest comeback.
I remember Tony cunningham being outstanding that day. Think he may have got a hat trick.
But given I've started to doubt myself I'm not c0ck sure. Ask Monkry tennis lol. :)
One thing also sticks in my Head. During that 1st 20 mins. A Fulham fan ( was wearing a black and white scarf.) Was stretchered along the touchline in front of us stood on the terrace (west stand lower for you young uns b4 it was seated) . After getting a good hiding in the ponty. Why the hell he was in there in those days only reminds me of our own Selwyn (give us a wave :)) Who liked to get in with the away fans lol.

It's still a distance behind the Liverpool game, but the play-off final vs Ipswich is my second-placed choice.

From the joy of Hignett's strike to take the lead via the back of the Ipswich keeper, to Barnard's missed penalty, which seemed to be the point where the momentum shifted.

It was arguably a higher-stakes game for the club than the Liverpool one, but it hurts less because of the pride I felt at the end of it, with our fans positive reaction to the Ipswich celebrations and the great atmosphere between the two sets of fans. It's a day I still have hugely positive memories of, but oh what a difference a win would have made to our future.

I've just reread the OP for the language used to phrase it.

I came out from the Liverpool game not feeling gutted.

Cheated, victimised, subject to a wider campaign to relegate us even... But not gutted. So I think I'd still rank the Ipswich game at 3-3 top of my gutted list of games we were ahead in.
