Two from Barnsley in the top 50 https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/30827/barnsley-chip-shops-celebrate-making-uk-top-50 A good amount of Yorkshire eateries in the top 50, that I am sure BBSers can vouch for. https://frymagazine.com/news/chippies-topping-the-charts-for-2025/
I've only had them from Frenches in Wells Next the Sea off that list, though I'd say they were OK rather than spectacular. Feels like a decent amount of flux. The last few years since we've shifted to UK hideaway holidays, we've tried to get fish and chips one of the days, so that list has been referred to quite a bit. Good ones in Cromer, Whitstable and Folkestone. Think there was a good one in Seahouses, Northumberland too.
Never had bad fish and chips. Had them that I haven't enjoyed as much from time to time. What can be so hard about deep frying fish in batter and chips until they slightly brown?
Dunno ask Harry Ramsdens at Blackpool, which I now know you haven't been to I haven't been to any in the list. Some of my favourites are Kingfisher in Wakefield, Papas in Blackpool, and Catch 55 Fish Restaurant in Scarborough.
I actually think they can vary quite a lot. We've quite a few locally that are OK but vary a lot and one that's good and consistently so, though the old guy sadly died last year after he fell and hit his head and his sons taken over, so I hope he can follow in his dad's footsteps.
Am I the only one who thinks that the Magpie is over rated? However, I am a little bit surprised that The Chippie in Hawes hasn’t made the list, one of the best fish and chips I have ever had.
No you're not, been we've been twice and after waiting an age to get served we were really disappointed on both visits, very poor quality and it certainly does not deserve the hype.
Another vote for Catch 55 in Scarborough. Stopped in over Christmas and it was really good. Sea fish at Conisborough is good, despite it being a trek.
I lived in London for many years and whenever I bought fish and chips they weren't much good. I guess they make up for it by having much better Chinese, Indian and other international food than they do here; in Holmfirth fish and chips are good but everything else is a bit poor.
The greens chippy in wakey that everyone goes on about on facebook and the guy off rate my takeaway covered was bloody awful we thought' a lot commented that they looked burnt and were swiftly shot down but ours looked burnt and were burnt' awful.
VC Jones I think it was, though it's a good while since I last went, well before pandemic but they still cooked in beef dripping.
Kingfishers gone downhill , not a patch on Durkar Fisheries but I can’t believe George A Green in Lupset Wakey isn’t on the list people come from all over to go to it
The food quality and service is as good as ever. The negative is the portion sizes shrinking. They have had the same plates for years and the fish used to hang off the sides. It's a shame they don't have more parking spaces, but that can't be helped.
Kingfisher is still decent if you're eating in, the takeaway side has fallen off massively over the last couple of years
Personal favourites Brampton chippy Lynn’s chippy in Mexborough and Billy Murgatroyds when we fly from Leeds Bradford airport…….currently praying for Lynn who has had a massive heart attack this week
