Tags did quite well too. Macca wasn't a brilliant footballer but knew how to defend. Paul Mcguggan big lump from Scotland also good defender ,Do I need to recall any other big shi@ house defenders. Kenny Burns we had on loan.
Paul Madeley of Leeds utd could play in any position on the field in the 70s. Are you saying its difficult for the modern day player to play in a different position. It's not asking too much let's be honest here.
Jordan Williams is miles ahead of these defenders. But look bk on here at the posts about him. If only he was still at the cub hey
He had his limitations though too. I'd argue mobility and recovery speed are things we're badly lacking at the minute as well as organisation and discipline, we're getting done over the top and down the sides repeatedly. Not sure a big lump solves that.
Yes I'm thinking a no nonsense centre back. Big lump may be wrong choice of words. But we do need someone who takes no shot ,and would take pride in keeping a clean sheet .
Not as centre back surely Baz. Like a Fish out of water for me. You may think the other CBs are as poor. But ?
It was no worse than Leaheys challenge on Watters in the 1st half that got a yellow or Scowens clever stamp on Watters which led to him going off
None of the names you've mentioned though have played professional football in the last 13 years. The game has evolved so much since then, even more so since the days of Gerry Taggart and Mick McCarthy.
confirmation bias is fascinating, the more you read about it, the more you realise its useless trying to change someones mind about something, in fact the more evidence you provide that contradicts their position the more a person becomes entrenched in that position. many studies prove this. And anyone who thinks they are different and look at evidence with a dispassionate eye, is exactly proving the point.
Tags and Macca would have definitely made it in today’s game. They would have evolved with it, they would have still been top players. What are going to say next, George Best would be no good because he hasn’t played for 50 years.
In your opinion of course. We've absolutely no way of telling. But you've missed the point a bit. My point was that the traditional centre half of 40 years ago is a far cry from the centre half of today. The answer to our defensive woes isn't a McCarthy or Taggart type. We've got one of them already, and he's struggling. I wasn't suggesting they wouldn't be able to hack it, more that's not what we need, or how relevant comparing a centre half from the 80s is to today's game.
Agree to disagree mate, Taggart would easily play in today’s game, would have relished the opportunity to play in such as a Sheff Utd team where centre halves were encouraged to bomb on under Wilder, used to burst through for us “ooo Gerry Gerry!”. Macca played in World Cup against very talented international forwards, I am sure he would get a game.
Agree he was better at right back ,but with his pace would easily better what we have at the moment, ideally anyone who can defend in the window please.
Paul you have to admit we're poor at the back and even in the centre he as to be better than his replacements.
