Data analylists are here to stay whether we like it or not.I was reading the other day Liverpool have 4 top analystics in their recruitment team It seems to be part of football culture and obviously the further up the tree you go theres more money at the clubs disposal. Mladen was the top analyst at both Leicester and Huddersfield and also 777 which is a world wide company. If the money people say you can only spend x amount you could be the best in the world but the quality you buy is reduced. One way or another the club is been run now like it has been since I started watching them. All the previous chairmen and owners have wanted the same thing which is to stand on its own 2 feet and be sustainable. We seem to be mid way between both at the moment.
I have to ask, do you have examples of this? I've seen lots o people venting, and plenty with their opinions on 'what's going on behind the scenes', and of course the usual suspects just doing what they do. Not sure I've personally seen much of people "telling blatant lies" though.
We have had 2 years to identify forwards and have failed to do so. We should have had 2 lined up for the start of the window
DKD and Phillips are midfield players. Farrugia is a full back / wing back. Jalo and Watters are injured. Humphrys isn’t a centre forward. Our current options are the ones I listed plus Nzondo. Unless we ar counting players who play in any position that might have played up front occasionally. I mean Robbo has been chucked up top very occasionally shall we count him? Maybe Jon Stead too.
We are 13 points worse off than last year, even if we average 2pts a game for the next 16 games that takes us to 75pts, its simply beyond us, like others admire you are trying to put a positive spin on things, but the reality is different, I'm genuinely more worried about getting another 10pts to not go into free fall. Not good enough at either end of the pitch, painfull but that's the reality.
That particular run had followed a previous mediocre one, culminating in the Leyton Orient shambles so, if anything, the optimism from it was the outlier. Since then we've reverted back, not only to the inconsistencies of before then, but are actually no longer being propped up by our away record. The difference is that the earlier run produced question marks about DC's capabilities more than anything, but the focus has shifted somewhat based on the generally held consensus that he's been shafted in the transfer window.
Cheers. Having mad opinions is not quite the same as telling blatant lies though, I think. You have a calm head and I respect your plea for balance. People on here definitely do go overboard at times. However I also think there's genuine reasons why fans are pi$$ed off with things right now.
Data analysis at the top level is a bit different I’d say. You’re dealing in a whole different pool of players. What it doesn’t show up too is a player’s mentality. We seem to get so many mentally weak players with so little fight in them it’s untrue. What happened to the Josh Scowens and Darren Sheridans of this world that we used to sign? Other clubs seem to find them but we don’t. There are no leaders at all in this squad apart from maybe Roberts.
I design, develop and publish a data analytics platform that generates an annual turnover of almost half a million. I regularly provide in-depth analysis via newsletters and webinars, and conduct training sessions on data analysis. I think it's fair to say I strongly believe in the value of data analysis. In most professions, including football. However, the expertise I have in this field in no way translates to the skills required by the professionals who use the data I publish to assist in their roles. I provide them the data that helps them make informed decisions, it gives them a measurable justification for the course of action they decide to take. But I don't have the skills and training to do what they do. I do not work with football data or any sports related data. It's a million miles away from that. But data is data. I could easily use the techniques I have learned and developed to work with sports data. But if it were football related data I worked with, it would not qualify me for the role of sporting director advertised by Barnsley FC last year. Not even close. The majority of the job description had no relation to that of a data analyst.
I think there's more than a shadow of a doubt that we'll be there or thereabouts. I reckon there's a fully grown doubt, large as life, an' it weighs fifteen hundred tons
Well when people sectively quote the manager to make out he said something entirely different to what he did say, that's disingenuous.
We've used data for sometime in some shape and generally speaking we used to get more right than wrong, it can never be 100% bang on that's the nature of football, some transfers don't work out. We used to seem to be able to get players from a league below we thought were capable of stepping up a level, they came, developed and moved on and we successfully repeated the cycle to keep us relatively sustainable. We took on problem players that had issues at other clubs or fall outs and again turned them round. I lost count at the amount of successful loans we had from Hammill, Trippier, Drinkwater, chopra, of course some bad ones too, but on the whole our recruitment was decent for size of club and budget, we certainly weren't hemorrhaging 6m a year. Somethings changed Brian, I don't know what but yesterday I named 17 players in a separate thread that have made barely any impact at the club a mixture of poor signings and even poorer loan deals, it can't carry on in this vein, be honest, past DKD, Phillips and Connell there's very little of anything of value our player turnover is through the roof. It doesn't look like we are building anything, there's no real identity in our approach and this transfers its self to the pitch. It's a relative to size of club and present day costs etc bur think back to the summer of 1996 our net spend was £125k after selling Andy Payton for 330k, homegrown players Moses, Eaden, Watson, Liddell with a season or 2 behind them, clever recruiting abroad De Zeeuw, Bosancic, Marcelle, spine of team with Redfearn, Davis, players from non league like Bullock and Sheridan and then added old good pro's like Wilkinson, Thompson and later Hendrie, fantastic balanced statergy that we built, with a manager only in his 3rd season. Were miles off now mate.
Sounds a tidy job you have mate. So what are you saying, the problem we have is not the data produced by the analysts but that whoever is assessing the data is not utilising it to its maximum ?....that’s assuming I’ve read your post correctly.
