He is one of the worst strikers I’ve seen in a Barnsley shirt in over 40 years. I can’t find 1 positive about his ability to play football. That’s not to say he hasn’t produced elsewhere in the past but he was an abject failure here to the extent it was comical watching him trying to trap or take down a ball.
When we signed him, I was really glad. He was poor for us pretty much the whole time barring the playoffs but I was optimistic after those games that he could do something this season. But no. I think technically he’s a poor footballer. Whether it’s a simple layoff, a pass out wide, controlling the ball or even shooting, he isn’t great. What he does have is his size and aggression yet for some reason, we didn’t see that in him. I said that in January he’d end up back in Scotland and after Stockport have seen him for a few months, I think by the time the Summer is here, he will be back up there.
Played 283 games but his average over those games is 51 minutes scoring 70 goals in total at an average of a goal every 208 minutes, based on his average minutes he's a 1 in 4 striker.
This season for us I think he averaged 1 in over 1000 minutes and that's not even a joke. He was in the 900s last time I looked but played more since
There seems to be an undercurrent of ‘it was someone else fault’ for his performances. Of all the things you could blame DC for, Sam Cosgrove isn’t one of them. He’s been given chance after chance to prove his worth. In all I saw, he had two good games for us. Awful signing.
That's the problem, he isn't a target man. People assume he should be because he's tall, but he's poor at reading the flight of the ball, clumsy in the challenge, doesn't hold the ball up well and can't work the channels. He's basically OK at getting his head on crosses, when enough of them are being supplied. That's all that's going for him, and why he isn't good enough for this level of football
No, not at all. The fact that he's played loads of minutes this year and hardly looked like scoring other than the good finish at Lincoln. He's the worst I have seen play for Barnsley since the 1979 season (When I started watching) and I was around when Willy Ferry played. The fact that he receives it on the half way line and starts running back to his own goal because his touch is worse than Harvey Weinstein and then carries on to lose it (This happened at least 10 times after he came on this season) tells me all I need to know. Utter dross, and I played locally with 10 strikers that were far better than him.
Sam is one of the most inept footballers I've ever seen in a Reds shirt. He might be a lovely bloke, but a football player he's not. I've seen him plenty, and he is not even L2 standard. Good luck to Stockport with him.
A very savage assassination of a Barnsley F.C player's footballing ability or lack of it. I'm shocked.
More crosses might have got him more goals, sure. But the rest of his game didn't lend itself very well to us getting into positions to cross. As a 'target man' I expect a little more
For all intents and purposes, he's no longer a BFC player. On loan for the rest of the season and out of contract. Open to criticism
It's as if the usual recruitment team at Stockport County had a day out of the office, team building or summat and they left their tasks with the groundsman or somebody. Makes no sense. Just why?
