With all due respect to Victor (who I like and appreciate for what he is), this only serves to demonstrate what a mess we're currently in. We signed Cosgrove as an 'upgrade', because in theory he could do the hold up play AND score goals. It turned out that not only could he not score, but he couldn't do the hold up play Vic could. In the meantime, Victor carried on doing for Burton what he did well for us, putting himself about and holding the ball up. At the same time, he added some goals to his game. So he quickly got signed by Bolton. But it quickly transpired the goals there were a bit of a purple patch, and he reverted to the mean, and Bolton have a striker who is decent at holding the ball but not very good at scoring goals. All the while, Barnsley are so desperate for a forward who can hold the ball, we don't care whether they can score goals or not. If they could just bring Phillips, DKD and Humphrys into play more often, we'd be just fine. So Adeboyejo would be perfect just now.
I didn’t think he was underrated, he just wasn’t very good in my opinion. His first touch used to bounce off him in all directions, his passing and link up play was very hit and miss and what was his goal record for us? 1 in 10 was it? I couldn’t believe how long he stayed with us to be honest. Sad state of affairs after saying all of the above that I’d probably consider having him back as at least he is actually a centre forward.
Yeah exactly, I always thought he was poor, despite his hard work. And its an insult to us now that we're in this position. Of thinking about needing Victor back, because our current strike force is so bad.
Another one who got dogs abuse, despite being a proper grafter. I agree with you Stephen, would take him back mate. Physical, decent pace, can hold the ball up. Not a great finisher but would certainly work his balls off and bring others into play. Overall, id prefer us to have someone better but could never fault his effort.
I wasn't a fan. Think he had a goal ratio of something like 1 in 9 or 1 in 10 for us. Never looked a threat as a striker and if folk a clamouring for him back then that just teams you how bad we truly are right now.
1 in 9 or 10 is a meaningless stat if you come on as sub for 2 minutes he averaged a goal every 379 minutes for us better than Humphrys / Cosgrove worse than Watters / DKD
I liked Victor. For me he's symbolic of our slow demise and poor and expensive choices. We could have easily kept him and he'd chip in with a few goals, but importantly, he had a bit of strength to him and an intensity and graft we don't have anywhere on the pitch now. He also scored some very decent goals, but all too often, if he started under Ismael, his role was to worry the defence into submission along with Chaplin and Woodrow who were by far the best pressers. Was he the best? No. Was he good enough to give a contract to? Yes. Is he better than any of our current forwards? Yes. You keep a player like that on a fairly small salary and you're saving signing on fees, transfer fees, agents fees and you're passing the baton and have a consistent. We sell our best players (eventually), we lose players out of contract, and we push out players we've never really given a chance to or are good enough to do a job. We'll see the same in the summer and I can see it being a massive rebuild. Needed I'd say given the poor 2 windows, but I'm not confident we'll come out of it in a better state.
This is a shameful example of how far we have fallen if we think the likes of Vic would excite us , Jean Yves Mvoto or Lee Crookes anyone?
This season Stephen Humphrys a goal every 371 minutes Victor a goal every 390 minutes I'll just leave that there. Not much between them.
