..please never, ever take Barnsley town centre for granted again. 3/4 pubs at the maximum, 1 of which was a Wetherspoons that had folk queuing outside based on the ‘1 in, 1 out’ system, even after the game at 3pm it was derelict, run down & nothing going for it. There is literally nothing there. What a shame for the local residents.
On the plus side it was free parking in Forge car park because all the pay machines were out of service.
Folk constantly pull Barnsley Council down. I think the Town centre looks better every week well done Barnsley Council. The music festival was up there last year also.
It’s not great at all and our town centre knocks spots off it. That said, I’ve enjoyed a few beers somewhere different before and after the game and no hint of trouble anywhere at all. Plus a rare 3 points so been a good day. Two poor sides I thought but crikey, Rotherham are much worse than us.
Sad to here.. the town centre used to be quite nice with a good vibe. And you could have a decent night in Rotherham several years ago.
I had an hospital appointment there caught train, man it’s grim but having worked loads in Rotherham I knew what to expect. Always said if you are feeling low about where you come from go to Rotherham you’ll appreciate where you live.
I’m from Donny - driving through Thrybergh down to Dalton, up to mushroom roundabout then on to town past the big Tesco. I do the route relatively often as the Mrs works in the paddy power there but after the first bit of Thrybergh the place really is the pits. I actually said to my lad that it makes you appreciate Donny when you drive through that way.
Spoke to some lads in Wombwell after the game. And they were going to Wickersley. Not done it missen but looked good for a night out, driving through once or twice at weekend. The place to have the most dramatic change outside barnsley in the Borough. Is Hoyland imo. Nowhere to touch it in the 70s for a pub crawl. Bugger all, to call owt now.
I feel sorry for Rotherham (town centre) it's been ruined by being sandwiched between Meadowhall and Park gate. It's a real shame too because a lot of the buildings in Rotherham town centre are beautiful, it just doesn't have the football needed to survive
Walked through Rotherham town centre last year on way to Clifton Park to see The Reytons. Looked like a derelict movie scene, Barnsley has a lot to be proud of with its town centre. Pubs, eating establishments.
The bit round the Minster wasn't too bad the last time I went; but the rest, omg. As you say, Meadowhall (mostly) and Parkgate has done for it. How popular is that tram that cost zillions?
The tram is quite popular but only because it goes, funnily enough, from Meadowhall to Parkgate They're currently planning on building a new train station and tram stop down between Parkgate and the town centre for I think about £110m
Shoppers were sparse in town centre even at 10 on a Saturday. Barely saw any shops though to be fair. Was like a ghost town.
