I've always found it weird that Bedford, as a fairly large town, has never had anything approaching a football club, rugby league/union or cricket side at a respectable level. Just an absolute black hole for sport. Can't think of anywhere similar sized that's the same.
They did have a season or 2 in rugby union’s premiership. But we’re always the underdogs and their natural level is championship rugby. Seem to remember Frank Warren throwing a few quid at it once upon a time.
