I say 'so called' because a large section are supporters in name only. Some of the stuff I witnessed yesterday was egregious. I've been watching the Reds for nearly 70 years and have seen all the good and bad times, but in recent years genuine supporters are diminishing to be replaced with foul mouthed morons whose football knowledge is virtually nil. I understand frustration, but what I don't understand is a man in his 40s screaming at the top of his voice "Connel, you f****** useless w***** gerroff", when there are youngsters about. That was not an isolated incideent. Furthermore what do they hope to achieve, do they really feel the abuse will boost a players confidence and make him play better? Earlier this season I and my grandson were at Goodison to watch Everton lose two nil to Arsenal. This is when under Dyche they were at a low ebb. The supporters were cheering and applauding the team at the final whistle. I couldn't believe it as it was a complete contrast to what I experience at Oakwell. No doubt I'll get berrated as a 'happy clapper' by the 'I pay my money I can say and chant what I like brigade', but common decency means you can't. Constructive criticism can exist without being abusive. In fact a bit of decency goes a long way in football and the world beyond.

    Connell’s performance was woeful
    The fans have had enough
    The home form is awful
We have a right to protest
    We deserve better

So foul mouthed abuse is ok is it ? Do you also believe that if Connell hears it he will play better.?

Tbh I remember people shouting abusives at players in the 80s, in some cases large sections of fans would aim monkey chants at opposing players, people would shout stuff at our own players, I remember fans shouting get off you useless ***t at Regis in the 90s and so on, I don't think things are that much different, in some cases probably see more online now than in stadiums.
Make no mistake things are very very poor right now and we have a big portion of an unhappy fan base, you'll never please everyone but believe me things will get much worse on current trend.

I agree there’s a line, however fan passion works both ways. You can’t ask fans to be passionate in success but not in failure. I’m afraid it just doesn’t work like that. I’d rather fans care and get carried away from time to time, than not care at all. Because when they stop caring, they will stop coming.

I also don’t believe this is a new thing. I’m sure you’ve seen this through the decades. I know I have.

You presumably didn't witness the "Ray McHale's a Wan@er" episode then? To me, nothing much has changed.

Agree with @dreamboy3000 . I personally don't think shouting at the players achieves much, but it's always been the way. They're on a lot of money, getting to do something millions would say was their dream job. They get the adulation too.

I sort of understand some of the stuff. But.
"You greedy b'stds get out of our club" is quite frankly pathetic. And anyone who joins. Give yer heads a wobble.
"Sack the board" has been around for decades and raises a point without personal abuse. I use neither tbh.
But have found myself frustrated and shouting obvious things like. . "Do we not do the basics in training " and "how /%"£^^%^%£% hard is it to find a teammate to pass to. lol. Odd swear word included..
Yesterday was quite frankly the pits. That's not criticism aimed at anyone in particular. but a fact the players themselves are aware of.

I think fans expect better from connell with him been captain. For me he's never reached the high levels of his 1st season under Duff. No need for the personal abuse though

It’s not nice I know, but you just have to accept that football attracts people of all ages, levels of intelligence who are impressed by different things. Even if some grow out of it, others will replace them.

There's a subculture of football "fans" who do have the attitude of "i do what i want, i do what i want..." it's usually the ones who have about 3 clubs on the go (usually their local club to cause trouble, and the customary glory club).

Depends on what it means to him. Might end up with a disgruntled player that wants to leave.

At least they still care enough to be angry. It when apathy sets in the club have a bigger problem.
After over 20 years as a season ticket holder I'm now into my 3rd season without one.
While I still watch and still want is to win my passion has gone.
Losing supporters is a much bigger problem.
