Firstly I have to say that I was pleased with the result, seeing as they had gone so long without winning something and I hate the fact that a small number of clubs win everything year after year. However, the media frenzy which is still going on is a bit excessive.

Also, Geordie fans, it's ONLY the League Cup that you've won. Not the Champions League, not the World Cup. I'm sure they started the season not bothered in the slightest about that competition and yet, here we are, delirium everywhere because they've won a "tinpot" trophy.

I still have resentful feelings about the club for what they did to us in the FA Cup Quarter Final back in 1998 but, that aside, it's nice that they've finally broken their Wembley hoodoo. They're still behind us on that score though :D

A major trophy. I just hope they don't go on about it for the next 35 years as if they did win the CL!

Not at all, such a big club that's taken 70 years to win a trophy, their fans thoroughly deserve this

This seems a really strange post from a normally sensible poster. Are you from Sunderland?

It happened under 24 hours ago. Of course there’s a media frenzy.

And no you’re wrong. The cups were Newcastle’s priority. They’ve fielded strong sides & deliberately targeted them ever since Howe took over.

Calling it a tinpot trophy is everything that’s wrong with modern football fans. Any cup victory should be massively celebrated. Football is about winning trophies not qualifying for a tournament you aren’t going to win or ‘winning’ the transfer window.

You could argue it’s one of the greatest cup triumphs. They’ve put out the current top four in the country on their way to winning it. Brilliant achievement.

I don't mind Newcastle as a place or their team, I like them better then Sunderland or the Fiddlesbrough lot. Having said that, I had to turn it off after the game, not because I didn't particularly want them to win, it was the absolute OTT commentator - "NO LONGER LOSERS!" wetting his pants like it was the greatest achievement since we walked on the moon.

Also I like them less now they are owned by the Saudi's.
Also they think anyone south of them is "from the South" and it really grinds my gears.

Of course I’m not from Sunderland! You’ve misread my post completely. There is no criticism from me about the club or their fans, apart from that day back in 1998 when Newcastle pulled out all the dirty tricks to stop us continuing our brilliant cup run.

It’s the media coverage yesterday, and today, which borders on the hysterical. But then that reflects the modern way of reporting football, whichever channel it’s on. It’s like it’s the greatest day ever seen in a football stadium.

I’m really very pleased for Newcastle, really I am, especially winning at the expense of Liverpool. I hope this is the start of more success for the club. Oh, and by the way, the word “tinpot” was very much tongue in cheek. I never use that word normally.

That was my view exactly although a poster above chose to misinterpret my OP.

I’m absolutely delighted for them. My daughter is at uni there and every time we visit I am struck by their friendliness/ lack of pretension and passionate support for their team. They played Liverpool off the pitch and were absolutely overjoyed as a team and fan base. So good for them and I wish I’d seen half the effort at Mansfield to be honest.

Still going on? It's not even 24hrs later.

First major trophy in c.70 years so yes the fans are going to celebrate.

And it's hardly tinpot, it's one of only 3 trophies that PL clubs enter for each season.

I'm delighted for them but it may well wear abit thin as I'm sure it won't be the last. If they had been aloud to spend spend like the blue side of Manchester our Grandkids would already think Newcastle had been a major force in world football forever.

Read my follow up post! I KNOW it’s not tinpot. That’s a stupid, ignorant word that some fans (here and elsewhere) use to describe some cup competitions. I certainly wasn’t decrying the achievement of winning it. I recognise the league cup as a major competition. Whether or not I choose to attend the matches is neither here nor there.

Read your follow up but only after posting. I do agree it has been devalued in recent years somewhat by the big 4 playing weakened teams all the time.

Newcastle is a great city and I love the surrounding areas, especially the coast. I spent 3 brilliant years there as a student between 1974 and 1978 and more recently visit my wife's aunty in Wallsend at least a couple of times a year. I'm pleased for the City and people but yes some of the media coverage is OTT - but it'll not last, they'll soon get bored and it'll be back to Liverpool/Man City/Man U/Chelsea....

To be honest, I've seen more media mentioning how crap Liverpool were than about Newcastle. I know Liverpool played 120 minutes mid week but personally I think it was Newcastle what made them look bad, not just Liverpool being bad. Completely outclassed in midfield, and Burn was just a rock for all those long balls and crosses into box.

I think it’s a huge thing for them, possibly opening the door to more success. You could see it in their fans faces during the game.

I know it’s not the FA Cup, but to beat the best team in the country and champions elect with the weight of historic failure on your shoulders is some achievement,

I'm genuinely pleased for the Newcastle fans who have had to endure several Wembley losses and years of Mike Ashley taking the pi$$ respect to Eddie Howe, tactically got it spot on and deserves to be spoken about alongside likes of Arteta now, the owners should start spending some of that 700 billion war chest.

I’ll tell you something……Should Barnsley ever win a major trophy in my time……I’ll celebrate it for 70 years never mind 24hrs.

    They deserve everything they had.

I think most of the country was rooting for them yesterday. Me included.
