If in time we do appoint a new headcoach, should we also have a clear out of the coaching staff. John Stead and Martin Devanney have both served under Neil Collins and Darrell Clarke and the team has got steadily worse as has the tactics. Shouldn't we have a change of the established coaching staff too along with the headcoach?

I would imagine for any future head coach it makes a difficult job even harder not having the people you want around you. I get the continuity angle with Davany if he was a top coach it would make some sense but let's be honest he isn't. The Stead one is obviously cost cutting lives in the area wanted to stop when Collins went saved paying him off doesn't appear to be any good either. Hourihane been doing the job two minutes gets the main job instead of the other two tells you all you need to know maybe keep him but in a less senior position he had under Clarke.

I agree, a new coach could also give the players a preverbial kick up the arse some need and increase fitness levels. We have now got to a stage where some players struggle to play for over 60 minutes and we are not even applying a high press. Teams under Stendel and Ismael seemed to be fitter with different and fewer assistant coaches.

IMO I would rather a new HC bring his own people in. Whilst some may say it adds continuity keeping the likes of MD & JS on, the only thing that seems to have happened over the past couple of seasons is that the football dished up has got continually worse. God only knows what happens during training but I would hazard a guess at saying not much judging by what we see on match days. Clear out and fresh start for me.

I would agree but the rate we are going through head coaches paying off a set of coaches each time gets very expensive.

I don’t know exactly what the coaches do on a day to day basis so its hard to really say how much the coaches actually contribute to the performance of the team. I was always of the impression that they run the necessary sessions as instructed by the Head Coach.

For example, Clarke wants the team to get better at defending the box so they’d run some defensive drills as per his instruction. If Collins wants the team to be better at passing it out from the back they’d run some sessions on that.

For me that says they’re only as good or as bad as the man in charge. If he wants to bring his own men in then so be it, but equally I don’t see how Davers and Stead are the problem either.

A new head coach should always be allowed to bring their tried and tested staff with them.

While Clarke was here, Stead and Devaney were very noticeably involved in giving advice to the players on the pitch during a game, usually stood in the technical area.

On Saturday, both were seated in the dugout throughout whilst CH was stood with Tom Harban.

As a visual clue, it suggests both are somewhat sidelined by the change in Head Coach.

When Hourihane got the gig he made a point of "bigging up" Harban in his first interview with the Chronicle. I thought at the time that Stead and Devaney were being sidelined.

There is that. But they should be looking at hiring a HC and actually backing him in the transfer market and letting him look after the football side of things. Appointing a DOF was a good opportunity to progress but it’s been a shambles and the bloke appears clueless. The lack of continuity comes from constantly getting rid of the HC’s they hire, which comes back to their poor understanding and poor decision making from the outset. The club really is a shambles starting from the top down.

Looks like Devaney and Stead are sat on their perch now. Not been off the bench coaching like they were under Clarke.

We're in the play-offs but we don't like the style of football we're playing, let's sack the head coach.

We failed in the play-offs and now we're midtable, let's sack the head coach.

Things seem to be even worse, maybe it wasn't the head coach, let's sack all the other coaches.

When's this madness going to stop.

There wasn't that much wrong with the coaches ,prior to the start of this season, I thought fitness levels were good and we achieved top 6 in previous 2 seasons.
It's this season that is the let down.
Is this down to the coaches ?

What we need is a Throw In Coach. Liverpool have one and look where they are.

What we need first is players who know how to take a throw in, before we get a Throw In coach....

Continuity of what? Decline? The continuity we need is of a good head coach who we can keep. Not a coach undermined by a substandard staff. I would love Hourihane to be that coach, but I’m seeing little sign of it.

I think we gave Collins a two year contract when he joined which would have been up this summer. I would assume we gave a contract of same length to Jon Stead and therefore I expect he'll be allowed to leave in the summer when this expires (unless the new head coach wants to keep him).
