This was also the season of the 'night the East Stand nearly blew down' and we witnessed the Malc Shotton wind-assisted thunderbolt !!
Yeah we had to win at Southend in the last game, and score 4 goals or more. And we had to hope other results went our way, but it was never going to happen. It didn't ruin though, what had been a really good season, with us finishing 6th.
As for Howard Kendall getting sacked by Notts County, after their home game against us. They did that twice that season, I think it was Mick Walker who was also sacked, after their away game against us!.
Was that in the Friday night game against Sunderland, when Mal scored. And Steve Agnew was with them that season, looking more and more like a bald eagle.
Reight weekend( result apart) , ******* carnage late satdy afternoon and into the evening/night........sithi.
Club was on its arse at the start of that season, most of the ground shut down, crowds dwindling, early doors, at one or two games there was less than 5000 there and team was towning results wise in the first few months of the season. Football wise you could see the team was getting better under Wilson then around mid/late October the results and football being played moved up a level and a buzz seem to come back around the club and from what looked like another season of struggle around d the bottom of the division we ended having a cracking season fetching through a lot of young lads who would be the bedrock to what happened two years later........sithi.
More than a bit of exaggeration there. Structural Engineers found nothing wrong with the stand as I remember
Great weekend that ... red hot weather. Southend fans called us lobsters as we'd all got sunburnt. Was that Taggarts last game for us. Seem to remember that he threw his boots into the crowd at the end
The penalty was one of the harshest I've ever seen. D. Given against Shotton. Just wish Bullock had scored from the quick break and one on one. after Watson saved it, Our fans would have gone mental.
Yep! , heard one of ours had his face rearranged with a plank of wood on the satdy night.......lively day/night in saaarfend.........sithi.
Wilson was sent off wasn't he, during the arguments about the awarding of the penalty. I never like seeing players going at the ref like that, but it was a really poor decision by him. Thankfully it was a poor pen by David Kelly, and Watson did what was asked of him. And why were we in the horrible dark green away kit that day, when Wolverhampton wear gold and black!!.
I was on a steam train on the Settle Carlisle line that day and because the train was late due to frozen points, we never got into Carlisle but stopped at Appleby in Westmorland. They wouldn't let us stay on the train so we all walked down to the town and filled up all the pubs, I can't remember ever being so bloody cold!. I heard about the postponement in the pub (No mobile phone back then).
