Fresh from scoring his first goal for the Reds - a late equaliser against Cambridge United at Oakwell - Jon Lewis spoke to the media ahead of our trip to Wigan Athletic. On last Saturday’s late goal Yeah, of course, it was great to get my first goal. But I think the most important thing is that we came away with a point. Now we just have to kick on and keep moving forward. On the performance against Cambridge United I feel like we looked particularly bright in the second half. It’s just about turning that possession and those opportunities into real threats- getting shots on target and putting crosses into the right areas. Overall, it was still a positive performance for us to build on. Hopefully, tomorrow we can assert ourselves in the game against Wigan and show that same level of dominance, both with and without the ball. On his fitness after a short layoff I played against Huddersfield in my first game, but then I got injured straight after, so I was sidelined for about two to three weeks. Since then, everything’s been good. I feel pretty fit now. I was coming off an off-season from MLS, where I was training and keeping myself in shape, but it’s not the same as getting match sharpness. Now, I’m really integrating with the squad and just trying to get as much out of it as I can. On his personal goals for the rest of the season I’m just doing everything I can to get into the manager’s thoughts—showing people what I can do and what I can bring to Barnsley. I want to bring excitement, showcase my playing style, and prove the type of player I am. For me, it’s about staying fit and healthy, being ready for my opportunities, and making the most of them when they come. On his playing style I’ve always been a winger in my professional career. I’m a pacey player who likes to run in behind and take players on. I want the ball so I can make things happen. I also like to get into good positions around the goal - whether that’s creating assists or scoring myself. Those are my best attributes. On comparisons with Fábio Jaló I always tell Fab, “You remind me of myself when I was your age.” We’re very similar players - we both like to take on defenders in 1v1 situations and create chances with the ball. Fab is a special talent. He’s only 19, but he’s got an unbelievable left foot, as we saw last weekend. I’ve seen it since I arrived here and watched him in training. There’s definitely something exciting brewing there. I think I can help him in certain areas. He’s got a lot of raw talent. From my experience playing alongside players who have featured in the Premier League and at higher levels, I can say he has all the tools to reach the top. I played with Christian Pulisic, who’s now at AC Milan, and honestly, I’m not even joking when I say Fab is just as good. Some of the things Christian used to do, I can see Fab doing too. I’ll try to pass on that knowledge to him. He has the world at his feet - he just needs to stay healthy and keep pushing himself. On working under Conor Hourihane It’s been great. The demands he’s brought to the camp have been really good. He’s setting high standards, and the team is working harder because of it. I also think the playing style suits me more. We’re trying to play a more complete style of football - building through the thirds. But one of the biggest things he emphasises is hard work. We still have to be able to press, turn teams over, and put in the effort off the ball. It’s been really good so far. I think he has a bright future in coaching. Hopefully, we can start turning our performances into results and prove that all the work we’ve been doing on the training ground is paying off. With time, we can really start to look like a well-oiled machine. Fixtures Wigan Athletic Vs. Barnsley - Sat, Mar 29 2025, 15:00 Continue reading...
I like this lad. He comes across well. We tried to sign him 2020, so when the Board say they have had people on their radar for some time, then maybe believe them.
Imagine the scene: Lewis on one wing, Jalo on the other. Both tormenting defenders, going round them and getting crosses in. Too radical?
Makes far too much sense that. Let’s hope we see some of that tomorrow. Probably won’t be from the start but would be nice in the second half at least.
He speaks well. I hope he can stay fit and get some minutes for us the remainder of the season because him and Jalo are both what we have missed this season, in my opinion. Hopefully him playing for a contract here or at least playing for someone else to pick him up means we’ll see the best out of him.
Yet again demonstrating that mladen sormaz is nothing but a liar and a gaslighter. Jonathan Lewis is NOT a striker. He is and always has been a winger and sormaz lying about his position to gaslight fans into believing he was signing players in positions we needed shows the kind of dishonest bloke that he is.
I asked this at the time we signed him and nobody replied, but where has Mladen, or anyone at the club ever called him a striker? He was described as a forward in every communication I can remember, happy to be proven wrong though.
Sorry you're right, it wasn't striker. He was described as being known for operating as a centre forward or something. Something which is clearly untrue
A winger or centre forward. I'll be honest, I haven't followed his career prior to him signing for us so I do t know whether he's previously played as a centre forward. But I think using the term gaslighting is a bit strong when the communications out of the club appear to mention he can play centre forward, rather than it being his primary position.
As whitey linked to the club claimed he was "Known for operating on the left wing or as a centre forward" He absolutely was not known for playing as a centre forward with Jonathan Lewis himself saying "I’ve always been a winger in my professional career" He really couldn't be any clearer
Its a case of whom does one trust most. Mr Sormaz, the architect of pinpointed recruitment, or Mr Lewis, a gentleman who it's unlikely many fans will have heard of. Can you do another poll?
Transfermrkt has him down as playing 21 times up front and scoring 8 goals. So to be fair he's only one saying he's played upfront. https://www.transfermarkt.com/jonathan-lewis/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/479610/saison/ges/pos/14
