I remember going on the revolution as a kid and was in awe of how scary it was, went back a few years ago and it looks tiny now.
When they got all their modern trams they were made in Germany and transported here, because it was still cheaper than being made in the UK, which is sad. The older trams still get used as "heritage" trams, but aren't included in the cost of a weekly tram ticket. A big part of the seafront next to Sea Life Centre is due to be knocked down. People are speculating it could be replaced by an 02 arena. That would be fantastic and has to be the number one choice for the council. They have so many iconic entertainment venues, but nothing big enough to bring in the tourists during the winter months, and they have a huge brand new car park and cinema just behind where it would be.
Not been for a few years now but the last time I was there it was depressing , shops with tatty frontages, mucky streets, unless its changed I would suggest giving the town a proper facelift to attract a bigger number of visitors would help the pleasure beach. That being said the prices being quoted per head are ridiculous there must be loads of families with members that don't like the bigger rides who just want a bit of fun and who would enjoy the atmosphere and the small stuff who must look at the prices and think 'no chance'.
The reason they made people buy ride tickets to access the park was to stop groups of unruly people walking around all day without spending a penny, causing bother. When they first started making people pay just to get in, it was a fiver and I was happy doing that. Pop in, watch the rides, maybe pay there and then to go on some, get a burger, play in the arcades etc. Now all that spend has been lost.
In all honesty I've always had a soft spot for Blackpool. i seriously thought of moving there in the early 80s, infact i got gazumped twice, on different properties, plus I'd got numerous offers of work to choose from at the time. I think it was Gordon Brown who had a hand in refusing funding to turn Blackpool into the Las Vegas of the North, when the Council wanted to build Casinos and Las Vegas type resort Hotels on a grand scale the full length of the Golden Mile. The amount of jobs that would have created would have been phnomenonal. Unfortunately for Blackpool, Browns morality and the fears, of over addictive gambling, escalating, plus the numerous objections, that it would effect the other cities casinos in the UK, mainly the ones in the capital, put an end to that idea. An idea which would have seen world wide tourism flourish for Blackpool and put it onto the international stage.for gambling Personally I thought the decision not to go forward with the Vegas plan, was wrong. and therefore contributed largely to the start of Blackpools decline. The councilors and the planing department were visionaries of their time, stating Blackpool was dated and needed to be futuristic in their nature let alone their outlook, rather than oversee stagnation, tiredness and decline of the areas in question. Which sadly we are/ have witnessed with the resort.
Last time I warn to Blackpool for a day out was about 15 16 years ago walking past tower with the Wife 15 old Daughter and 13 year old son when about ten morons on a stag do piled out of a bar and decided Blackpool Front when full of Women and kids was a good place the get their tackle out and wave them about and ask any females to give them a blow job.
