When we appoint our next Head Coach is it time for them to bring in some of their own staff and cut ties with Devaney, Stead, Gilkes and Hourihane. Some of our most successful managers have initially been our assistant managers Hunter, Wilson, Ritchie, Hecky who've all stepped up successfully having gained experience beforehand. Hourihane could possibly be retained and continue to learn his trade, ready to step up next time. I think both our last 2 head coaches Collins and Clarke could have done with a good assistant alongside them rather than just a collection of coaches not amounting to much.
The coaches aren't the problem It's the quality of the players they are expected to work with. You can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.
All I’ve got to say to that is Spackman , wouldn’t get rid of Disco ,you need some continuity within the club when a new manager comes in
Absolutely. You get a manager you rate & he brings the staff who he’s had success with otherwise what’s the point?
Which players have shown improvement though? Maybe Okeefe in patches? Just think it looks very stale and some new faces and a strong assistant can be just as important, there's been no clear standout candidate that has looked capable of any succession plan to takeover. Stead and Devaney in particular have offered very little.
What if that continuity is poor though? Same voice out on the training pitch, wouldn't it be more beneficial for a new head coach to come in and assess things with his own team, that way he gets exactly what he wants out of the players and has familiarity with his own team, rather than having to assess the squad and Daveany, Stead, Gilkes and Hourihane.
The coaches aren't the issue. It's the computer game mentality of the board. Fair enough if Clarke wasn't able to keep discipline in the players day to day, but the problem is deeper than the coaches.let the manager manage
I think Hourihane will remain. He seems to be working incredibly hard and I’m sure anyone that comes in, would probably like to have him involved. Gilks is the keeper coach I think so I don’t believe head coaches are usually that controlling over those are they? The 2 that stick out are Devaney and Stead. I guess with Devaney he has a lot of ties with the club so will probably stay. I am obviously not sure what contract Stead signed when he came here but I wouldn’t have thought it would’ve been over 2 years so I wonder if we will see him go in the summer.
When all said and done loyalty can only take you so far, just my opinion but I can't see what any of them have brought to moving us forwards, whilst is very noble and loyal it's a results business, we're having to keep plugging £8m+ funding gaps, we can't carry passengers. The next head coach needs to know he's got coaches around him he can trust to deliver. There's not 1 single coach at the club that was a defender, we've looked woefully unfit thus season and can't do some of the basics. You have to ask yourself have we got the best coaches at the club we could possibly attract or are we employing people for nostalgia?
Any new coach should always be able to bring in guys they know well and trust and not be forced to work with previous guys the club don't want to pay off.
You need someone who knows the club , players , academy , fans etc In not saying a new coach shouldn’t bring an assistant with him but scrapping all the first team coaches doesn’t work , and it leaves a problem when new coach either gets sacked or sods off to a league above
But what are they there for a guided tour of oakwell? The new HC would obviously assess the squad and surely wouldn't be swayed by the opinion of coaches that have done very little, it's nothing more than wages for loyalty, not one of them look capable of being developed into a future HC perhaps Hourihane aside. We are just paying wages out for little in return, we've got players who've regressed massivley such as Connell. Bobby Hassell and Nicky Eaden should be more than capable of providing insight into the academy for any new HC *Edit if you also look at the amount of coaches whom came to the club alongside a manager and stayed after a manager left us, Hunter, Wilson and Ritchie all stayed and stepped up achieving promotions, it's not always the case they all leave, it's how we've found gems previously.
Hourihane will be given the gig full time, unless he loses all the remaining games. Im not against it, however i hope he’s able to identify his own coaching team, & implement his own ideas. Also use more academy products, & any players we do bring in are good enough to make the starting 11. No more punts using the scattergun approach.
