Like bitches. It's been crap for years. Worst thing about it is you wouldn't accept it was coming. Telling people they're wrong about custodians and decisions made at boardroom level. You reap what you sew. Always had this idea of a ploughed field when I heard that saying but now I realise Oakwell might as well be one.
There's been nothing but criticism on here for our owners mate. For years. Plenty of abuse too. My personal view was Conway and Lee set us back years and years. Nareev and Co came in first season almost got it perfect and we were bad refereeing decisions away from promotion alongside a 123rd minute gut wrenching goal. Second season wasn't as good, but during that season the board stayed strong instead of selling inform players, especially Kane, Cole & Williams when only having 6 months left in Jan. Which at the time, was the right thing to do as we were pushing for promotion and eventually finished in playoffs and would have been absolutely slaughtered on here had we sold them. Hindsights a wonderful thing. This season, quite simply, has been disastrous. Everyone has been let down, especially the fans. I didnt mind the appointment of Clarke, some fans only wanted British managers for some reason, and he had plenty of lower league experience and promotions. However, he got sold short and we've been ***** all year. But the fact is the board have taken loads and loads of stick in recent years. People even lie about them which is absolutely mental.
Not me mate, I've been calling Neerav and JAQ out even before they sacked Collins. A lot of fans are finally starting to wake up and realise how ******* **** this lot truly are.
They haven't a clue how to run a professional football club in the EFL. The fact they managed to lose £7 million a year while taking the club backwards more than Conway and Lee did is a work of unique ineptitude and incompetence. Their decision to appoint a DoF to over see the entire football side of the business who is nothing more than a data analyst yet is allowed to dictate to the coaches how we play and who we play and disastrously who we recruit is probably one of the worst decisions a board has ever made at Oakwell.
The money loss problem isn't unique to us. Its incredibly common. The issues are how we are spending that wasted money. The DoF, I think what they've tried to do, is emulate what elite/top tier clubs do. Look at Brighton with Dan Ashworth, incredible work who then joined Newcastle and eventually Manchester United. Issue is, with appointments like him, you either get incredibly lucky or you have huge sums of money to play with. Unfortunately, we can look at as much data as possible, but literally 100s of clubs will be in a better position to purchase a player than we are. I think at this level of football, we should be looking for a DoF who's previously been in management. I.e warnock at Torquay (though I think he's only advising), someone with contacts and relationships.
i think this is a good example of how we see things differently as fans. As i see it the clinging on to those players was ok but i was disappointed that we didn't have the ability to either a) extend contracts or b) have a succession plan running to make their departures seamless. Im still not sure we have improved in these areas. Also, from my perspective, we had an unbelievable fall from grace. Being in the playoffs for prem to now heading to lower table L1 in such a short time doesn't make me think we are making good decisions at the board level. I admire their resolve in funding us but i don't believe they consistently make the right decision. But hey just my observations.
I agree with you in principle, then when I play it it out, the problem I/we get with succession is we didn't know what league we would be in. If we'd gone up we would have bought from a different list on higher wages. Arguably we did have cover everywhere other than left back and centre forward.(As you say they're just not as good) The cover we have and have had, has led to complaints of a bloated squad. We seemed to try to have 1 first team, one cover and at least one growth player/ punt for every position, which sounds sensible. The counter argument is just have one good first team player and academy players as back up, which works until you get injuries or people run down contracts. In my head if we'd have gone up we'd have kept half of the players who left on a free.
I was feeling a bit down after last night's game so it was just what I needed to wake up this morning to be browbeaten by a fellow fan. Have a good day, Stephen.
but these players didn't decide to leave or not after the season ended. They had already decided not to extend contracts or didnt have them offered month earlier. They always say players shouldn't have less than 1 year left if the club wants them to stay. Equally we would have as a club had multiple scenarios. We didn't replace Cole with a player anywhere near to the L1 equivalent position, or two to make up for one even. So the fact is we did recruit on the knowledge of our position and in my mind didn't do a great job of it.
