Went for a quiet pint in one of locals last night and suddenly heard the word Barnsley in a conversation behind me so I switched on my finely tuned spidy senses to hear them praise the town after a recent visit. Town centre , bars and people were all highly praised - had little lump in my throat! Makes a change from usual negative stereotypes
Everyone I've heard mention the town centre recently, from some northern QPR fans on the way to Sheffield and a Lincoln and Notts County fan that came to watch Barnsley recently, has said its ace and at the very least, a lot nicer than they were expecting (Bolton fan on a vlog last weekend). All credit to the council, architects, builders, and the residents/business owners who keep it vibrant.
Walked through the food festival before Derby game - it was amazing seeing the amount of people there.
Just about to hit Baltic Market for Sprog#1 belated birthday lunch. Will listen out for Barnsley goss.
We come regular, i tell the Wife its to see the Granbairns, its because i miss the place an i cant live wiart mi potters Steak slab's, an Pork pies, as the saying goes YOU LUCKY LUCKY BARS TARDS.
Some of our BBS posters have slagged our town off.Personally I can't think of anywhere better I'd like to live.As a town we have it all not like some one directional places.
I have to say that the town centre has improved beyond recognition over the last few years. Well done to all concerned.
Brilliant isn't it. I make a point of mentioning Barnsley town centre to anyone who I hear mentioning going into Sheffield, meadow hall, parkgate etc or saying they're going out for a meal or a few casual drinks. So far every single one of them who has gone has come back telling me how much they liked it. From being the only person at work a couple of years ago who had even visited Barnsley at all in the last decade, we now have 5 other people going on a fairly regular basis. And there aren't exactly hundreds of people where I work
"Are people denying Barnsley is a **** hole? All things considered I would never choose to live in Barnsley. How many lakes fields and woods are in Barnsley town centre? if you want green within half an hour, with Kent and Sussex on your doorstep and so many lakes and rivers, worlds your oyster just because people are used to perceiving Barnsley is some unknown haven of paradise... doesn’t mean you can’t be open minded to see that other places have more going for them. it’s fine for your own ignorant opinion to be wrong, I completely accept that. the food and ale really isn’t up to scratch in Barnsley, but it’s all subjective so I respect your opinion that you sadly think it is. Barnsley fans slag off another town, yet can’t take what they throw... there’s a shocker! My last 5 dialogues with locals I didn’t know in Barnsley have resulted in racist bigoted xenophobic views that I didn’t ask for or welcome. There are some good people in Barnsley. There are also some vile scummy people there too. that’s not to say such imbalance is local to Barnsley, but at this time, I’m very content keeping my returns to my home town to a handful and not increasing them. I spend loads of time roaming London, in my edgy bohemian areas in particular, and that’s where you get smiles, conversation and new experiences galore.my simple standpoint is I couldn’t live the same life if I was imprisoned in my home town. I’d find the best I could get from it, but it would be lesser than what I’m now aware of... and I fully accept there are other places I’d gladly live that aren’t where I live now. Kingston is a fabulous area as an example, but I suspect my next move if not out of the UK, will be Bristol in time" Heh heh
Pretty sure there's green down at Dearne Valley park within 5 minutes - 10.minutes you have the Fleets. There's good people everywhere and there's vile people everywhere- that'd life unfortunately. Opinions I passed on were from people who had been to the town as visitors and praised it.
