The trouble is, I'll be amazed if it happens early. Look at last summer, everyone knew for months he was coming to us but one of the parties involved pissed around and dragged it out for months.
If DKD and Phillips are sold we absolutely have to keep Russell. Played further forward we need to be building a team around him. He’s looked class in the final third in last part of season. Problem is, he only has a year left. Would he be persuaded to sign an extension?
Agree mate, Toney left Peterborough at 24 years old having just bagged 24 goals in 32 games, Brentford paid 5m with another potential 4m in add ons.
Maybe we should be happy with 3M. After all its well known, in and around the football world (fans) that we usually sell anyone for less than 3M.
DKD, Phillips, Russell, Humphrys - that must be about 50 goals. I'd assume they'd be replaced, but getting rid of all of them at once when most of the rest of the squad is complete pump would be a huge gamble, even if it brought £8 million in transfer fees. It's clear we have to sell and that Phillips will be one of them. Personally I'd be looking to offload him and Connell, and bending over backwards to keep DKD unless a silly offer comes in. £3 million sounds a little cheap, even taking his age into account. Attackers command a premium, and we got £5 million for a defender last season.
3 million and we will have been robbed. I expect him to go though as throughout his career he's moved on regularly.
Yeah like them. How much have we got for them? The books suggested around the same figure right? 3.5m for Mads and 4m for Kitchen. I guess we can also add Cole, Styles, Kane, maybe. Bit earlier 3.5m for Hourihane and Bree. According to transfer market, the single source of truth ;-) we have only sold 10 players above 3m in our history.
But we are desperate for cash, we'll be wanting to encourage suitors not deter them. The reality is we need to sell.
More money comes in from being higher up the league. There are no rich League Two and Conference teams.
I'd sell. I'd fancy us to sign another DKD in League 1. We're too quick to do ourselves down and accept what we have. Phillips, Connell and Russell can go too for the right bid. Time we started moving with the transfer market instead of reacting to it. There's players X,Y and Z out there that would gladly sign for Barnsley F.C.
I had Football Heaven on last night on my way to play football. There was a caller who was a Barnsley fan who asked Rob Staton and Andy Giddings how much they thought he was worth. Rob Staton reckoned given DKD's age and inexperience at the level above that we'd do well to get £3m for him. They then had a discussion about whether we should cash in for him, given he cost us £750k less than 12 months ago and reinvest that in 3 or 4 players of similar value, or whether, as the caller wanted, we should hold onto him and try to build a team around him with free transfers and loan players. I reckon someone's heard that and twisted into "he's off for £3m", as is often the case around this time of year.
That sort of money for a 3rd division player is money you can't turn down. He as had a decent season . Money that shouldn't be squandered like it as the last 5 years.
Given his age? He’s hardly an old man, at 27 he’s just coming to his peak as a footballer. Should be a bidding war for him. £5m min plus a sell on clause
