Don't understand why it took so long. I had them down as guilty after 10 minutes and if I was on the jury, I'd have been clock watching, thinking hurry up and get it done because I know the outcome already.

But it makes you wonder just what the defense lawyers did try to do.
Did they believe at any stage that they were doing a good job for the accused.

I imagine it happens everyday. Will have been a state supplied lawyer, getting paid the bare minimum and with a shed load of case work to get through. Two blokes with the combined IQ of a conifer and not a leg to stand on. Every second trying to defend them was most likely taxpayers money down the drain.

Everyone has a right to a defence. Habeas corpus etc.

Well that's going to be a laugh.
You can hear it now, 6 months suspended sentence and a 50 quid fine.
As the judge will say, "Well it was only a tree".

They should have extra years added to their sentence for pi$$ing the court and jury around by pleading not guilty when it was a clear as day that they did it.

Not sure I'd like to live in a country where you could be convicted without a trial.

What these two clowns have done is stupid, sickening and irresponsible. I am glad I don’t live in them same county as these vermin.
But…. The crime is; they cut down a tree.
Does the fact it was a ‘significant tree’ alter the crime?
If a rapist raped a homeless drug addict, it doesn’t make it more rape if said rapist attacked a significant, for example, pop star.
I have seen people, actually on my street, cut down trees for fire wood. I have reported it to the council (as it was on council land) and nothing happened. Nowt!
So these idiots have cut down a tree, and I hope they get punished, but, in simple terms, their crime is that they cut down a tree.

Did the tree have a TPO on it?

I've no idea, but it would be significant if it did against a tree that didn't
