Never went to the old den . Went to the new one in 95. Think we won 1-0 . Was living in London at the time and my now wife came down to visit. I took her to the game, that was the 1st match she ever went to . Incredibly 30 years later we are still together :D

And Allan Clarke's last, I believe. He hung up his boots as player manager after that and concentrated on being manager.

Interestingly, I haven't heard of the concept of a player manager for years now. Thing of the past.

John Hendrie tried doing it here, at the end of his playing days, and he failed sadly.
But that was back in '98, so yeah I wonder, who really does try to do it at this level, these days.

My favourite memory of the old den was 1986 think it was last game of the season. We turned up outside Magnet if that was still its name then at 6:30 for 7am departure. Bus never arrived. Four of us headed to train station but with it being Millwall we were unsure if we should risk it. At that time there was a taxi firm outside station, as we are debating driver comes out and asks us where we want to go. Millwall we jokingly say, OK says driver I’m a reds fan quoted us a price which I think was about £100 tells us to wait while he nips into the office to tell his wife he’s getting paid to go to the match and offf we go. Pretty uneventful trip down until we get down there. Obviously no satnav so tried and trusted method look for floodlights. Finally we see them it’s now around 3pm we all jump out and realise it’s the valley. Back in car traffic was terrible finally found the Den about 10 minutes before half time. Parked in that horrible car park after coming through the tunnel were there. Runs to gates bangs on chief steward asks what we want, to come in, no chance he replies where you been till now. Told him we’d come from Barnsley by taxi but got lost. He told us to stop taking the piss and f**k off. Fortunately a police officer overheard the conversation and asked to see some evidence so driver had to pull out his badge or permit and at that stage he told the steward to let us in. Good job really as we were starting to get attention from the hoolies that had already been kicked out. A day to remember, unfortunately one of the lads passed a few years ago but that trip always puts a smile on my face. You reds.

I went to that game. The New Den was something else back then. I remember at half time the Barnsley fans realising that they could watch the match in the concourse whilst having a pint. Unheard of then. End result - loads of fans never came out for the second half!
    Won 1-0. Liddell.

I think that was my one and only visit there and I travelled by train. South Bermondsey was at the away end and I had no trouble going down from the platform to the turnstiles but getting back was a different story. There was heavy police presence outside and they refused to let me up the path to the station even though I showed my return ticket (to Gloucester). For some bizarre reason I was forced to turn right and circle the entire stadium to get where I needed to be. This obviously meant mingling with home fans instead of the quick getaway that I had hoped for. I had to get a later train. Luckily I was wearing nothing red!

Yet another example of stupid behaviour by the police. I just don’t travel to away games any more, this being one of the reasons.

I was at that one. Probably played their supporters team that morning as well.

Yo Fitz kid, where've you been recently ehh lol.
But yeah that was an unbelievable win there that day, in what turned out to be Machin's last season.
Yet again though I suppose, this sort of performance and result, makes you wonder why we weren't challenging for promotion!.

i have a similar tale from a home game vs Leeds.
I was on a last push to get to the game as my eldest had a morning match in the Dearne Valley.
We decided to park near Mill of the Black Monks near Cundy Cross, and walk up the park to Oakwell.

After the match we were heading home to Sheffield, so took the road to Stairfoot roundabout, and then via Worsborough towards Birdwell.

Except some jobsworth police officer didn’t like me in the middle of his convoy of Leeds coaches (which were inexplicably being directed South), so he ordered me to turn right at Worsborough, back towards town. So you have a resident of Sheffield being made to travel north on the A61 when they want to go South, and a convoy of coaches being forced South, when they want to go North. Bonkers.

At least you were safe in the car though, not walking among hostile Neanderthals

I remember after one of Hendries games we were in the pub after and it was a resounding yes he needs sacking.I think at the time a lot of fans felt a feeling of entitlement. When John was sacked we were 10 th in the Championship, maybe he wasn't as bad as many thought including me.

It was mate, yes. Apparently it was the 80-81 season though as we didn't play them the year after (we got promoted).
