A good interview here with Oldham's owner Frank Rothwell. I particularly liked his final quote, which those in charge at Oakwell should take note of... “I know nothing about football,” he claimed. “I’m not an expert, but I employ experts. That’s how you get on." https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/oldham-athletic-frank-rothwell-wembley-35310810
This is a key in building high-performing teams and organisational capability. The 'boss' can be a leader, make decisions etc. However, a good leader compensates for their weaknesses and lack of experience and domain expertise by assembling a strong team. It should be complementary skills and competence. Together, this can, and often is, more formidable than one person calling the shots. However, one skill the leader needs is to know their own weaknesses and find the right people to form that team. I have said many times in here that I wouldn't overly criticise the individuals, but as a team i dont think we have got it right. First and foremost thats on the ownership. Leadership and org capability go hand in hand.
And we did, last season. Flatman is well regarded with a good business head. Hayes in marketing is always solid and a lifelong fan. Mladen - still to be seen. Rob Z seems to be switched on too. We have put people in the positions to run it. That was the biggest move that our owners did last summer, and for me, was about time. Not every person will work out - that’s life. But it’s a start.
Stoke at their old ground Boxing Day 96. Lost 1-0. Coldest I’ve ever been in my life ( and I’ve done base camp Everest). Hundreds of white mice running all over the floor. I’m still not thawed out properly.
The games at Port Vale ,Watford, and Middlesborough were all memorable for being cold but Oldham and Newcastle beats them for the plummeting temperature race.
