Bath. And just to rule out some other options... BR is Bromley BN Brighton BS Bristol BL Bolton we could have BE or BY i suppose...
There's not a lot of difference in the distance between Penistone Church and Hillsborough, and the distance between Penistone Church and Oakwell. 11 miles in the former case and 8.1 miles in the latter, so it's perfectly understandable that there will be a lot of Wednesday fans in Penistone.
They can boll.ux. Simple as that. The boozer is a Barnsley boozer. End of. What will be acceptable next? Corner Pin is an owls supporters committee meeting pub? Take one pub and the invasion will continue....
Postcodes were created to aid the movement of mail - nothing more, nothing less. Each postcode has a post town. The creation of Sat Nav’s and digital maps created a whole new use for the Postcode, but ultimately, there are differences between post towns and the official town/borough boundaries. Examples of places in the borough of Barnsley that have different post towns: Penistone has an S36 Postcode because mail is processed at Stocksbridge DO. S36 Postcodes have a post town of Sheffield. Bolton on Dearne, Thurnscoe, Goldthorpe have S63 postcodes because their mail is processed at Manvers DO. S63 postcodes have a post town of Rotherham. Examples of places that have a Post Town of Barnsley that aren’t in the borough: Brampton (Rotherham) has an S73 postcode because mail is processed at Wombwell DO. South Hiendley (Wakefield) has an S72 postcode.
Tregaron S.Wales has the post code SY25. Tregaron 85 miles away from Shrewsbury. (with apologies for the most irrelevant post of the day!)
But if the postcode defines the sorting office for mail, what's wrong with Hoylandswaine, Barnsley, S36 etc. People would then know that Hoylandswaine is in Barnsley even though its mail is sorted in Stocksbridge
You can’t have multiple post towns within the same Delivery Office. If the bulk of the addresses in that office are in Sheffield, then the post town is Sheffield for all of them. It also avoids missorts. If the machine can’t read the code, but then reads the post town as Barnsley, it’ll send the mail into the Barnsley DO pile. I’m sure if they were creating them again today they’d do things differently.
Goes back to the days when Doncaster had a Mail Centre. All the mail for DN went straight there to be sorted. It hasn’t been used as a Mail Centre for a long time though. All the DN mail goes via Sheffield MC now.
