    To be fair I think smoking is a net benefit to the economy; the high levels of tax and killing people early more than compensates for the healthcare costs.

    People don’t just suddenly die though from smoking do they? They become ill, economically inactive, years of treatments for the many, many ailments smoking causes. Then they die.

    No they shouldn't but hopefully it will serve as a warning to those considering such treatments.

    Yes, but the tax off the cigarettes outweighs the cost of treatment.

    I'd guess the majority of cigarettes smoked are duty free in the UK now. Obesity costs the NHS about 6.5 billion a year. I'd like to see the government crackdown on that aswell.

    And that money was ring fenced for the nhs was it?

    No, but I don't see what your point is - that's a question for the government and their allocation of funds.
