Because Keir needs those cells for those worse offenders who post memes on Facebook about illegal immigration or criticise Israel.

To be fair I might be wrong because I dont see every case. But feels more gradual, and feels like it was definitely happening under the Tories too.

You're right. But Sir Keir really has taken the ball and run with it in my opinion.

Whichever way someone leans, left or right, it can never be ok to send someone to prison for something they've said on Facebook. It's just smells a little like the early stages of the introduction of Orwell's thought crime.

I totally agree Frog, and their light sentence is a disgusting insult. Two and a half years ehh for the appalling cowardly crime they committed, and they probably won't even serve that long.
What will happen now to the poor lass involved, as she tries to live her life. Will she ever be able to forget about this ?.

Time to stop this farce of sentencing where we all know the perpetrator will not serve the time given. We need to issue sentences as the time you will serve and any misbehaving during your time will be reviewed and extentions added. In saying that there two should have got 5 years and serve 5 years.

Sexual assault sentences are often lenient, a lot of the time they don't even make it to court. I hope she's getting plenty of support

They are almost invariably in conformity with the sentencing guidelines though, Helen. I don't know whether the OP is saying the SG's weren't followed in this case - or just that the relevant guideline for these offences is wrong. That's a bigger question.

    It is very worrying.

I saw the other day that boxing trainer, promoter & former fighter Stefy Bull is facing up to 16 years in prison for conspiracy to supply cocaine. This is his first offence.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t face a significant sentence as I know the consequences of drugs can be catastrophic but I don’t understand why peados & rapists seem to regularly get shorter sentences than drug dealers.

If you deal drugs, get caught & lose everything I think you’re far less likely to reoffend.

If you’re sexually attracted to minors then I don’t see how that ever changes.

Agreed, I think money offences are often published more severely than actual physical harm.

    Per the Lancashire Post:

They were both jailed for two-and-a-half years and ordered to sign the sex offenders register when they returned before the court earlier this week (June 16).

Both were also made subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a restraining order.

Commit a minor fraud offence and you'd get longer than that. The sentencing guidelines are an absolute disgrace.

It was only weeks ago they said they were giving more lenient sentences and letters g folk out after serving just 1/3rd of sentences to free up jail spaces. Sad times a joke.

Do they still chop off relevant body parts in some countries, based on the crime ?.
Chop a hand off for stealing or even castrate them for sexual offences!!.
If that rule was brought in over here, it would certainly make them think twice.
