Yeah everybody, I think it's time for some more Tykes memories isn't it. The Viv & Danny season ehh, which had brilliant potential at first, and I really think it could have worked out, better!. So come on then, what did you all think about this season, which could have been ace!!.
I remember Harry Gration on Bbc Look North at the time, saying he thought this was a great signing/appointment. And I thought exactly the same then, as Harry. Viv and Danny were both starting out as player manager/coach then, of course, but I think it was exciting when they joined us.
Remember Gerry Taggs was sent off a number of times that season. I think the refs were actually scared of him and his Norn Iron big chin lol. And btw, who has the record of bookings and sending offs, as a Tykes player ?.
There’s a video of this season on YouTube at the moment. Watched it last night. Taggart was sent off twice in four days!!
I met Danny at the weekend for the first time. I was slightly reluctant to bother him as he was eating out with his wife (and also a rather sour experience meeting one of the Arctic monkeys along the lines of never meet your heroes, but that’s another story) but my wife took things into her own hands . What a brilliant bloke. Lived upto my expectations and more. Super humble and generous with his time.
We got an ex-England international as a manager felt good - think that feeling quickly disappeared. Football wasn't great Felt Danny got it in the neck from the fans and took a while to settle
Mediocre season, huge learning curve for both Viv and Danny. Viv learnt that this managerial thing wasn't for him, Danny learnt that it very much was. All turned out fantastic in the end and it was an honour and a pleasure to see Viv in a Barnsley shirt. He was still a class act as a player and he did the honourable thing in stepping down after he realised his heart wasn't in it. He also influenced the most important signing in the club's history when he convinced Danny to join him here and told John Dennis he wouldn't take on the role without him.
Danny got dogs abuse from the fans (unfairly in my opinion), in the year he was player coach. Anyone remember the Bromsgrove FA Cup game? He was pelted the entire game until the 89th minute, when we somehow managed to turn it around with 2 goals in the last minute.
Was one of those red cards away at Luton when he booted one of their players almost into orbit within the first few minutes? I think we ended up losing 5-0 or something?
Left at half time of first game West Bromwich Albion i think, to go watch U2 at Roundhay Park. Zooropa Tour.
I went down to Plymouth for the FA cup 4th round tie. Freezing cold. Gerry Taggart last minute equaliser to make it 2 all. Won the replay. Oldham away in the 5th round..Baltic iirc. Gunnar Halle went down with no one within 5 yards of him.to win.a penalty.
I've watched a lot of football over a lot of years but that remains the worst refereeing decision I've ever, ever seen. Absolutely disgraceful.
This was my first season back watching Barnsley, my dad took us to a few games in the 70s and 80s but he played local football on Saturdays and there was the small matter of football hooliganism as well. I remember very little of the football, but it must have been enough as I have kept going ever since. The crowds were small, much smaller than now, there was no fan zone or different offers of food. Just football.
Which prompted the 'Barnsley Religious XI' thread on a previous incarnation of this BBS. One of the longest - and arguably funniest - threads that ever ran on here. Anyone got it archived somewhere?
I think the Gunner Halle incident was a different season (possibly the one after ?). The Oldham cup tie in 94 was settled by a certain Andy Ritchie scoring the winner for Oldham!
I think most of my memories have been mentioned. We were gash at bromsgrove. Plymouth away. But the one thing that sticks in my mind most. I dropped on the first team training. as an academy game got called off. It was pretty obvious Viv wasn't cut out for management. As if owt needed saying, he passed the buck to Danny. Even when questioned by Shez, as to whether he needed to turn up next day (i think it was west brom away on the sunday) for the game even though he was injured. (Arm injury) Danny's reply. "Everyone in tomorrow" Demandingly.
