I was HMS Manchester golf society captain 2008 - 2011… a task bestowed on me mainly due to lack of enthusiasm from others. The job mainly consisted of trying to get discounts at golf clubs on the port visits we had and rounding up drunk sailors who professed an interest in the swinging of golf bats. so I bought some golf balls to give out on our Falklands trip 2009, we also went to Caribbean in 2010 where no doubt these balls lived on… they were cheap enough but importantly stamped with the ships name. I was in Exeter last week having a knock around Woodbury Park.. walking down a fairway a lost ball was buried in the grass… 16 years later I find this! Falkland Islands to Exeter is about 7800 miles I think It’s a really bizarre and small world sometimes
I played with a guy who sliced his tee shot into the woods. I said I didn't think he'd find it but he insisted that he would. When I questioned this he told me that the ball he was using was easy to find. If it drops on the rough it emits a bleep If it drops in water, an inflatable ring brings to the surface. If it hits a bunker, a screw worms it to the surface. Fantastic I said, where did you get it? He replied "I found it!"
Love watching Golf on the telly, only ever played it once, worked at Lytham St Annes during the 1996 Open while stationed in Weeton, we were paid 6.00 a day, an did car park duties, litter picking, an markers for the course, it was great. Had a signed ball off Nick Faldo, love to know what happened to it.
I've got one of those golf balls that when it gets within 3 inches of a hole it automatically goes in. I just have to remember not to put it in my back pocket, I'll get my coat!!
I was on RAF Gan (Maldives) in 75/76 and was a keen sub aqua diver. Shortly after arriving on the island a treated myself to a nice Seiko diving watch and was out bubblying 6 months later when I noticed my watch had gone. We search around the lagoon for hours but no sign. I had my name and service number engraved on the back so I hoped that someone would eventually find it. 4 years later, just before I left the service, I got a call from station HQ to report to the admin officer who presented me with my watch. It had stopped but with a new battery installed it fired right up. I've still got it.
