Anyone done it? I’m starting tomorrow from Edale, just doing a week to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Too chicken to do the whole thing in one go, going to do it in 3 stages I think. Bricking it now, ngl.
I completed the Pennine Way with 4 friends 28 years ago. Started out from Edale on 19 July and walked into Kirk Yetholm on Tuesday 5 August. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk and it ranks very high in my list of top outdoor adventures. The last day of your walk will presumably be from Malham to Horton, which imho, is one of the best days of the whole journey, with Malham Cove, Watlows Valley, Malham Tarn, Fountains Fell and Pen y Ghent the highlights. Looks like you may have a mixed bag of weather with some low cloud, rain and periods of dry sunny and warm days. Take it as it comes ...... Enjoy!!
On the same theme, does anyone know if you can get a phone signal at Crowden; I would need to call for a lift home ( not sure what time I would get there for a pre arranged lift).
Done it 3 times. 1981: Edale to Kirk Yetholm, honeymoon (yes, honest!) for me, my wife of 1 day, and dog Bandit. Sadly my wife twisted her knee on day 1 and couldn't continue. I carried on by myself, because (her words) "we promised Bandit we'd do it". Mainly wild camping but the odd B and B. 1982: Edale to Kirk Yetholm. This time my wife made it all the way. Once again mainly wild camping. 2013: Kirk Yetholm to Edale. On my own, no wife, no dog. First leg to Dufton in May, then second leg to Edale in July. Brilliant experience, lifetime memories! Good luck.
Thank you! Yeah the last day looks amazing, but tough. People say the first part isn’t the best but I don’t mind the moors. So let’s see, I’ve got mi coyt fo’ rain.
I'd love to do this kind of thing, including the Yorkshire 3 peaks and Eyam/Grindleford circular. I just haven't the time!
Me too mate, It must be a great feeling of achievement and massive respect to those that make it happen.
Mr Fired and I are doing the Sheffield Way, written by Peter Price in 1985. Not to be confused with other Sheffield Walks. It’s a 45 mile Circular route taking in some stunning scenery. The team that wrote it did it somehow in a day and night. We’ve done it in several stages and it’s not easy! Having completed the route over many stages (and feeling knackered every time), we decided to update the route - as many paths were inaccessible, or the script was just wrong. We are nearing the end of the re-write. It’s a hilly, tough route but it rewards you with stunning views on every stage. So close to home. Our re-write will come with advice on transport to/ from the stage start and finish points and pubs to visit at the end if each stage. Get in touch if you want details.
A great walk, the longest, 272 miles, pub crawl in Great Britain. Walked it in 1977 with a school mate from Broadway Comprehensive. It took 12 days and stayed in many types of accommodation, mainly a ridge tent, but also stayed in a pub, caravan, old rail carriage, farm, a front garden, a back garden and the Youth hostel at the end. I even had to use a phone box to call my dad to send me a postal order to the Kirk Yetholm hostel so I could pay for the return train journey. Made some good friends; as you where walking the same route at the same speed. The sudden view of High Cup Nick is truly an unforgettable sight. On Ilkla Baht'at and There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly were sung to exhaustion. The first day was the hardest, Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and Black Hill to the A635, had great views and even managed to find a pub, the Huntsman Inn, I think.
That sounds fantastic, great achievement and memories. I do a fair bit of walking around Black Hill and like you say the views are great and the pub would have been the Huntsman.
