I think it was Kitching who said Watters was the best player on the training ground but lost confidence come game time.
Got to agree with this tbf. He causes teams issues at times with his pace and directness. I was also told he was one of the best finishers in the club. But for me, his injuries have hampered his form. As soon as he gets a run of games and gets fit, he comes off with a dodgy ankle or something. Then he’s missing for a number of games. There were a few games last year where you could see he wasn’t 100% fit and kept playing. Mansfield away was one of them.
If he's not going to be here then c'est la vie.. But he won't be easy to shift. Not going to go for a lesser deal.
If I'm not mistaken the club tried to move him on at the beginning of last season but he (watters )refused to go out on loan He's quite happy picking up his high wages for doing nothing in return....Khaleds parting shot of inadequacies
I rate him. I think he's a good player. He's fast, he constantly stretches the opposition defence and our best performances tend to be when he's in the team. He's also injured a lot so can't be relied on. Maybe he'll never reach his potential but I'm certainly not influenced by the hatchet job he's received on here. This BBS tends to be frequented by decent people. Many are extremely dedicated Barnsley supporters. But football experts they are not. Neither am I, but I'm comfortable with my own opinion and I often feel that the consensus opinion tends to be way off the mark. I also know that if Watters has a great season the majority will be happy to be proved wrong as they just want the best for the club.
But have you changed your opinion of him that's the million dollar question The other question being...was he charging his car, if so, was he dressed as a cowboy, soldier or roman centurion or maybe a Zulu warrior or if stretching the imagination an elephant all noted for charging at some point....just met hecky in Wombwell Woods he reckons Conor was dressed as a battery
It's the mental side of the game where he lets himself down. All the things you say is right, he's quick, makes decent runs etc. But when he gets in front of goal in a game situation he turns to mush more often than not and fluffs it. His composure and decision making in that key area is terrible sadly. He may benefit from some sports therapy or something like other athletes have done to overcome similar. But there is something there that kicks in when he gets these big chances.
Elements of this I agree with. We all have our views about players and all want the best for our club - that much I agree with. However, I personally think he's overrated and is, overall, a liability. He's out too often ( not his fault but nevertheless an accurate assessment) and he simply doesn't score. If he doesn't score in the position he's in then, regardless of how well he does in training or what his xg is he's not good enough. This is L1 not the PL. I'll change my view if he perks up under Hourihane and plays more but at the moment I've got the opinion I've just expressed.
Good point. I'll rephrase my point. He doesn't score enough for someone with his xg. He flatters to deceive too much. Can't argue with your stats though if they're correct. Mind you, I argued with people who proclaimed Collins' stats as manager as I thought Collins was pants. If you think he's a good player as you said then we'll have to disagree. (you may also disagree with me about Collins - fair enough if you do). Bottom line for me, and you may disagree with me on this as well, or think I'm unrealistic - I want Barnsley to be contracting players with the potential to be Championship material. I don't see Watters as that.
