60 is probably a bit too young reflecting on it further, but yes, I do think there should be an upper age limit on leading a country.
Give em the vote, the Country's fooooked an i doubt 16 yr olds voting will make it any worse, pay yer bills an enjoy yer life.
It was said tongue in cheek, he hasn’t pulled this out of a hat, it’s been a pre-election policy of The Labour Party. As has already been said, it will go through the usual processes before it can be passed as an act of Parliament.
Maybe it's my wife's fault. She was a teacher at comp schools until recently and the horror stories she came back with about year 11 or thereabouts kids, by the way NOT STUDENTS as they are called these days, was enough to make you despair for the future of not only themselves but also society in general. Watching tv news this lunchtime they interviewed intelligent kids, presumably at good schools, who seemed to have a clue what was going on. I guess the school and the kids were chosen carefully. I asked my wife what the same interviews would have been like at the places she'd been at. I already knew what she would say. And she did. It tends to taint your outlook sadly.
You can extend the point beyond age though can't you? There are people over 18 who can vote and don't have the first idea of what is left or right in a political sense. There were people who voted to leave the EU who admitted they'd never voted before but wanted to be out and not 'ruled' by foreigners. Many of those people will now be dead. There were people who voted for DePfeffel Johnson because he made them laugh. Given the last decade, we can't honestly look at a younger age range and say they have no idea what they are doing, when evidence points to slightly more than 50% of the eligible voting public being of that very same ilk.
It's all been said already in this thread, but for me I don't have an issue with it, let them have a vote, they are adults for the purpose of many other facets of life.
I personally wouldn't have any issue in the voting age coming down to 16. I reckon the data on age demographics might have summat to do with it though. Very much doubt he'd be pushing it if the youth age group was trending to the right. For similar reasons I imagine right-wing parties will challenge it. Either way, I do think we should unify legal age across the board. It would be really weird that you could vote and join the army at 16, but you couldn't get married or watch Saw 2.
I can guarantee that the Reform vote will be massive amongst 16-17 year old voters (unless things change drastically in the next 4 years). There’s a noticeable shift with the young at the moment based on the media they are consuming. Polling of 18-24 year olds mentioned above doesn’t account for the current mindset amongst Gen Alpha who will be the first 16 year olds to be able to vote in a general election.
