Says Rachael Maskell. Don't know if she's right or wrong, but there are many religions represented within Parliament? Separately, I can't see how she can be returned to the Labour whip any time soon as she clearly has no intention of following the party line on any issue where it doesn't suit her.
I think there are many in the house that would be members of the 'Church of the flying ventriloquist chapter of god sqadders' if they thought there was a vote in it for them!
The Reform guys like to pretend to be Christian and embrace Christian values, whilst doing and saying the exact opposite. A lot like many Republican senators. So there's that I guess.
Christian. Huge left wing socialist. Part of Corbyn’s shadow cabinet. Worked in the NHS for decades. Trade union official with Unite. York Central MP for the last 10 years with large majorities. I would have thought there’d be room in Labour for principled disagreement - especially when it’s rooted in care for the most vulnerable. But I imagine Starmer wants to present a united party, united government, so he’s shedding those unwilling to toe the party line. And she’s been very vocally against current Labour policy. Personally, I don’t recall Labour going into the election suggesting they’d target the disabled, elderly and most vulnerable. So I appreciate many within the party will find that tough to swallow. Maskell being one of them. But I agree, I don’t see a future for her (and many others) in this particular party.
Politics should ignore religion and be completely secular in my opinion. If a person wants to believe in a fairy tale, that should be nothing to do with the State. However, at the same time the state should not discriminate against anyone. Everyone should be treated the same regardless of belief unless that belief is itself discriminatory. Unfortunately many religions are.
Politics, monarchy and countries in general should be doing the opposite. Distancing themselves from religion and playing down the importance of cults.
Be interesting to see if anything comes of Corbyn's new party. I think Ms. Maskell has already rejected joining it, but Burgon and McDonnell must be twitching.
Either way, they’re lost MPs aren’t they? Not ideal based on current polling. I’ll continue to vote for the Greens but should Corbyn’s oft-mentioned new party come to pass, I wish him/it well as I would any left-leaning party. Good that there’ll be a variety of options to choose from, rather than various shades of right.
I used take a bit of notice of David Lammy until I heard him gushing about his love of god and his devout christian beliefs. I'm afraid I can't give any time to politicians who believe in fairies!
It really doesn't, that's the last thing we need in this country. When religion becomes involved in politics you get even worse decisions. Ask the women in America who have been raped made pregnant and now in some states can't get an abortion.
York Central, Rachael Maskell's constituency, is the only Labour seat in the whole of N.Yorkshire, I believe - or, at least, it certainly was before last year's General Election. When I say "is", I mean, of course, was, until three days ago.
