for £8,000. It was a complex transfer as we had to negotiate with Middlesbrough (his parent club) and Chelmsford, where he was loaned. We'd apparently tried to sign him the previous season but he didn't want to move permanently and went to Chelmsford instead. As a result, Chelmsford had to agree to end the loan after which we completed the transfer. Quite unusual in those days apparently. What a piece of business it turned out to be - Cec would score 33 league goals (+1 in the FAC) in 37 games the following season - still a club record. Did anyone on here watch him that season?
Tremendous player, could turn on a sixpence in the penalty box, to create chances. Had much pleasure watching him, so talented.
75 years ago, 1950, was the year I was born. The first center forward I remember banging in goals was Lol Chapple.
I bet you have some great stories about games and players from over the years - sorry if the post was confusing
I certainly have (I got to my 90th birthday last Saturday) but the memories are still there!). Refereed at most levels for 24 years latterly, and there are more memories! Incidentally, Cec was up against gentle giant John Charles when playing against Leeds on a number of occasions, exciting times.
Belated Happy Birthday @GeorgeRobledo. And I for one would love to hear more memories like this - brilliant!
Incredible stuff. I'm assuming you saw Lol Chappel in the flesh as well, but just missed out on Ernie Hine's second spell with us?
Yes, when I started watching Barnsley many years ago, Lol Chappel was the regular centre forward (striker hadn’t been invented then!.
