OT: Best Sunday roast / pub dinner?

Recently moved to near the Peaks, Hare and Hounds. If you get a sunset then sit in the beer garden as the sun goes down behind the Manchester sky line. Beautiful. £6.80 for a pint of peroni though!

 

Slightly off topic, but can you actually beat a Sunday lunch that’s made at home? I think not !

downside is the washing up is an enormous ballache ..

 

The Dunkirk (between Cawthorne and Denby Dale).

 

Best thing for that is a dishwasher, not too expensive either. She’s normally happy and paid off after a bunch of flowers each week

The Woodman Inn at Thunderbridge near Shelley, lovely setting & good food

 

Heard so many say this before today going to have to try it.

 

Been to the Salt House in town three times this year and it’s been exceptional but also agree about the Boatman’s Rest being very good.

 

I’ll go against the grain here. Only been there once and found it to be way too busy. When we went it was more like a canteen than a pub - kids running around, staff shouting across tables at each other. The food was good but not in a hurry to return

 

Not exactly a carvery but a while back we called in the thyme bistro at Cawthorne for lunch on a Sunday & had no idea that they do a roast dinner.

It was really nice & was £17 if I remember right. They only did chicken & beef when we went but the roast potatoes & veg were lovely.

We used to go to Ye Olde Mustard Pot at Midhopestones quite a lot after a decent walk & that was very good. It’s a good year since we went so I’ve no idea if it’s still as nice

I've never been to that pub, but my Mrs is from Glossop originally, and her grandparents live in Simmondley.

I'd argue the Boatman's Rest doesn't fit the brief. Food is very good. Choice is excellent, nothing is overcooked and the value is exceptional. It is always rammed with the downside that it's noisy and chaotic and the carvery queue can snake round past where you're dining. The upside being there's nowt worse than a quiet carvery and veg that's been sat on a hotplate for an hour!

It is definitely not a beautiful building or setting, the beer wasn't great last time I had it and if you're unlucky enough to be driving, the unbranded draught cola is vile!

My shout for the brief - plated lunch not carvery mind you - would be Whitley Hall. Food is excellent and plentiful. Not cheap but not prohibitively expensive for a one off and the setting is lovely.

To be honest I do like the Boatman's Rest and do go fairly regularly. For the money, it's truly unbeatable. I also regularly recommend people try it but strictly on that basis. If you've a busy day on and no time to cook or just fancy treating yourself to a day off cooking without breaking the bank, it's brilliant.

As a showcase for Beautiful Britain and its famed relaxing hostelries, not so much.

 

Oh and a shout out for The Old Post Office at Haigh does a good Sunday lunch too. Not exactly idyllic bang next to the M1 but look the other way and the view isn't too shabby. Also very easy to get to, by car at any rate.

 

Another place in the Peaks is The Old Hall inn at Chinley , great food and exceptional beer selection
