According to transfermarkt, hes played 95 games for us. 95x66k is over 6 million quid, comfortably. This cant be right?
Very few sides spend much money in L1 on transfers, last year with Birmingham & Wrexham was very much a rarity. Most clubs trade in loans or freebies.
More than you think do. Especially those trying to get out at the top end. Those down bottom often rely on frees etc.
Last 3 seasons are £8m, £11m & £55m. Out of the 55 last year £40m was spent by Birmingham & Wrexham. So yes it’s increasing but historically it’s very low. Not including wages.
If two clubs got promoted spending only £40 it shows what can be done if you're shrewd in the market.
In the thread there’s more info which i summarised in my post. We were 4th highest in wages and 5th highest in transfer fees paid.
There were only 2 other teams that spent more than a mil in transfer fees last season including Peterborough. I think is more of a fair reflection to compare it to wage bills as historically that is correlated with success. Over seas owners will be willing to spend more in transfer fees but Birmingham and Wrexham still had the top 2 wage budgets in league one. I'm sure if we were to look at the majority of the transfer targets we've had this summer we've missed out on them as other teams can offer more wages
Doug Sez, "I'm done with Sergio He treat me like a rag doll" He hides the television Says "I don't owe him nothing But if he comes back again Tell him to wait right here for me Or try again tomorrow"
Well that's not true as brum, Hudds, Wrexham, Charlton, Bolton all spent over a million in transfer fees last season and that's just off top of my head without thinking
Charlton's net spend was 300k as they sold Alfie May to Birmingham for just over 1m, Huddersfields net spend was £800k as they sold Rudoni to Coventry for 6m, Bolton's net spend was £100k as they sold Dion Charles to Huddersfield for 900k We received 600k for styles last summer that's it. Wrexham turnover 26.7m Birmingham turnover 27.8 Bolton turnover 21.4m Huddersfield turnover 18.4m Barnsley turnover 9m We're not in the same ball park as the clubs you've used as an example, they are clubs with bigger turnovers from bigger fanbases or have wealthy owners.
Summer before we sold more and spent even less than we did last season though. Even when we do sell we don't spend. The original post I replied to never mentioned net spend either. It was claiming basically no clubs paid out more than 1 million which wasn't true. Regardless of where the cash came from, those clubs spent over a million in fees for players
But had they not got transfers out of the door then perhaps they wouldn't have spent what they did, so net spend is very relevant. It's been very well documented many times that any incoming money the club received isn't solely for spending on transfer fees, it goes towards the running costs of the club and has maintained a top 6 wage bill for the past 3 seasons, it allowed us to gamble on promotion turning bids down for players Cole, Kane, Williams and Cadden. It simply isn't a bottomless money pit, we have a budget and we have to cut our cloth accordingly, you might not agree with it or like it, but neither you or I have had to fund losses of 17m in this league whilst trying to remain somewhat competitive, it's a thankless task. People think we have a pot of cash we can keep spending, we don't unfortunately, we have to wheel and deal and develop players, that's where we are it.
